For me this is an impression of a sad young boy. Sorry I can not help you how to improve but for me this simple doodle is perfect. The streaks on his face, that look in his eyes, the dullness of the hair and his pout shows absolute sadness for me but very well executed. The background is simple but it does show turmoil. It fits very well with his sad expression.
