Walk a mile in my shoes.Realise what there is to lose.
Contemplate how it changes life
and causes endless struggle and strife.
Feel the magnitude of death,
a part of you has died and left.
The one you built your world around,
now only in a photo found.
No longer feel their warmth, their touch
although you yearn for them so much.
Know the loneliness devouring,
see flowers by their graveside flowering.
Look ahead with a heavy heart,
a long time to wait, to be apart.
So for just a while walk in my shoes
and understand what I go through.

Thanks, I wrote this for a competition but like most of my poetry it is also out of personal experience. I started writing about my grief after I lost my husband now nearly 4 years ago, so nearly all my writing has a ring of truth to it.

So well expressed. I like this format. And as the comment below states maybe we can never understand completely another individual's pain. Even when going through a very similar experience we are all unique. Nobody can really be in our head feeling exactly what we feel. I think they can come close though. Those words 'feel the magnitude of death' say it all because when you love so deeply that magnitude really does hit home.
