Description This is a pic of Harry our foal, not doing so well after his birth yesterday, he died twice, but now 24 hours later, he is bouncing around driving his mother crazy

The story of Harry's birth:
Yesterday we had to force our brumby Bella to foal. She was having some difficulty so I called the vet out, who then decided that the foal has to be born immediately. So for the next 30 mins we tried to get it out...it was horrible and hard. We had to tie ropes to the feet and head and try and pull it out, three people pulling on one little foal, I was sure we were going to rip it in half.

Eventually the situation got desparate so we knocked out the horse she dropped to the ground and we ripped it out. The foal's tongue and gums were blue, he was dead so we had to start to revive it. The vet did CPR while I rubbed it vigorously and after a few minutes it took faint, shallow breaths...and then it stopped again. We repeated the process and it started to breath again.

after an hour or more little Harry (Named after my recently deceased Grandad) tried to walk and eventually did. He could not suck to start with so we milked the mare who was still out to it and tube feed him. When she woke I had to milk her and bottle feed him until she accepted him and he could find her udder.

24 hrs later, he is bucking and kicking and feeding on his own. Harry is a little fighter, but if he were in the wild, where his mother was from early this year, they would both be dead. She is only 2 and he was too big for her little body.

I am so tired. I was up all night with Bella and Harry making sure he was feeding and that she was ok. Bella is pretty sore, but she is recovering slowly.

What an amazing and heartfelt story. If I were you, I would have stayed up at night too to make sure they were OK. Heck, I would do that any day even for a healthy horse. :3

Thanks heaps, it was a pretty crazy time but he is awonderful boy now that I will not part with, he lets the kids climb all over him and he is very bossy with other horses too, he knows who he is and he is proud of himself...be it very cheeky as well!

IΒ΄m so happy for this happy end! Last time we didnΒ΄t have such luck...there was something wrong with mareΒ΄s health and she rejected the foal and mauled him badly. I volunteer for the afternoon watch, beacuse everybody else was tired from 14 days overwatch and went to bed. It was the worse 10 hour "shift" in my life...even though everybody gave their best, IΒ΄ve found him dead in early morning. Nobody forced me to stay, I could turn and go away...but I didnΒ΄t. I couldnΒ΄t forgive myself.
I was sick after that, 41 fever and total psychical exhaustion. But you know what, I would do it again If I must.

The mare still has some health problem, other mares are in 5th month, but she doesnΒ΄t seem to be pregnant. But personally I think itΒ΄s better so.

Harry seems to be quite a character

Thank you very much, sorry about what you went through, that sounds terrible. I'd got through it all again too, we were very lucky we did not lose both mum and bub, lucky they were brumbies (wild australian horse) they are very hearty, strong horses!

Thanks so much, he is doing wonderfully, very handsome and has the most perfect body. Can be quite cheeky but is always wanting a cuddle. Good luck with your choice of career, the world could do with more vets who have their hearts in it.

He is, you would not think that a week ago he was still-born, but today he is driving his poor mother nuts. She is only a baby herself, I have had her since Feb, she was caught in Jan, I did not know until about two months ago that she was preggers - I was told she was about 4, but since then I have been told by my vet that she 18 months to 2 yrs old...A baby! they both were at deaths door last Sauturday when we had to pull him out of her, he was too big for her.

there is a pic of him here a few days after the birth

And wow. Looks like "teen pregnancies" happen everywhere. XP

OMG I didn't know that was him!!! She is just a young baby huh?! And he's so pretty!!! He's gonna be BEAUTIFUL.

SuperSal001 In reply to sparkpaw [2011-09-26 11:54:50 +0000 UTC]

I'm so grateful, things could have gone the other way so easily. Yeah she is very young, she should have never been preggers, but what happens in the wild is all up to mother nature, she is lucky she was caught, she would never had it on her own, they both would have died. He is a very cheeky boy, jumped on me today

HOAH!!!! that's nearly what Nacho's chemo therapy and operation cost... we payed R15 000.00 for him... but as you say, it is worth it! - i had quite a close encounter with my pups this morning... took them to the park for a early walk, this friggin black labrador, who always terrorizes us, came out and stormed us... i was ready to bite the boy... for some odd reason, he ran back home... i think my face scared him... must have thought: HOLY CRAP that's one mean motherf*cker bitch!!!! sorry...
Anyways, i have had my eye on this dog for a while, he is a real trouble maker in the area... just glad Nacho and Gina behaved so well!!!!!
