Description I finally took pictures of this to upload it. Black things aren't easy to photograph!

It was basically just a test to see if I could work with this stupid artificial clay (I really prefer pottery clay!).

At first I wanted to do a super-stylized bat, basically a ball with wings and a cute face, but half-way through I decided to go for something more anatomically correct... which didn't succeed. Ah well. It's still cute?
I've got some work in progress pictures here: [link]

I'm going to give this to the first person who really wants it and loves bats. So leave a comment!

Such a cutie!

I just tried to google "harvest bat" to see if there is some kind of bat with a long tail - and this one comes up first among pictures!

Is it painted, or was the clay itself black?

Btw., real bats can be very cute (they have incredibly soft fur, too)... until they look at you. They can turn their head in just the way a human does - I guess the rumor about vampires changing into bats comes from that. I love animals, but that one quick look a bat once gave me was creepy

Haha, no, I made this bat up! (:
(which probably explains the awesome google rating )

The modeling clay was black! then I gave it a coat of glossy varnish.

I love bats! I love watching them flutter overhead on beautiful summer evenings, and I always squee with happiness when some get lost in my room (which admittedly happened only twice, but I was completely awed by the swift way they can change direction, and by how silent their flight is).
When I was in India a few years ago, I saw vast colonies in a half-flooded underground temple. And there were fruitbats just hanging in the trees in Mumbai!

You may have guessed by now, but they are one of my absolute favourite animals.

That might be it, yes

I also enjoy watching bats overhead, especially I'm still amazed at the comparison of a bird's and a bat's flight. And it's adventurous to have one lost in one's apartment, though I'm usually scared for the little creature's safety. They fly so quickly and they have trouble finding their way out. Add one excited hunter cat to the equation and you have quite an explosive mess. Thankfully she never managed to hurt one, though she once brought one down to the carpet, poor thing (but at least I saw it up close ).

But the greatest adventure I had with bats (apart from the one who looked at me so human-like) was that one time when I understood bats can get confused by light. A bat flew into my room (imagine space cca 3,5 x 5 x 4,5m and count in furniture), I shut the cat out, opened the window and waited for the bat to find its way out, lights on. What was my surprise when instead of the first bat flying out, a second one flew in. You can imagine that with their swiftness the room started to appear rather crowded and I started to think about whether they aren't light sensitive after all, even though it seemed weird, seeing their orientation should depend on space, not light.
Nevertheless, before I could mull it over, a third bat was in and outside the window suspicious clicking from who knows how many other could be heard. At that moment even I started to feel nervous, considering my friend had been recently bitten by a bat and had to take shots against rabies.
Not knowing what else to do I switched the lights off and hoped it will help. I'll never forget the few moments I stood there by the closed door in sudden darkness, heard and felt three bats clicking and circling around, hearing and feeling them barely avoiding my face as they passed by.
But then I could hear only two, and then one, and then it was quiet and still again, though I still could hear them from the outside.
I guess you can understand I carefully closed the window before I turned the lights back on (and let the cat in).

But in retrospect it was an amazing experience...

Oh wow, what an adventure!

...Perhaps bats are attracted by light because they hope to find moths there? I once saw some very well-fed geckoes who hung out around an outdoor light where the insects basically flew right into their mouths.
Yummy!

I still don't know to this day It's also possible it was a coincidence, the first bat somehow "calling" to others, then finally finding his way out shortly after I switched off the light... I really don't know. But your theory sounds good

That's so cute! It reminded me of one evening when a small bat flew through the high open window into a flat my sister (~Lawenta ) is living in and she had to save the poor thing before her cat succeeds in catching it. It was so small and adorable in her hands It had some difficulties to depart from a palm but it managed to fly away in the end.
Very nice work. I love the ears.

Thank you!
Yes, I had a bat in my room once too, and I was amazed by how soundlessly it could fly! (I always imagined them making a fluttering sound) Eventually it found the way out though. They are incredibly cute and awesome animals!

(just to clarify) Does that mean you want it?

I was more amazed by the speed of it I thought it would be slower since there were many things it had to dodge.

I would certainly like to have it here, probably hanging on a string from the ceiling but I am afraid I can't give you any money for that or pay for a shipping if it's high , so I guess that other bat-loving watcher will have to accomodate this cutie

Aw well, perhaps we can make a trade someday if you want to.

Well, if there is something you would like to have from me then sure Of course it depends on where is situated the small purple room you reside in The shipping can be real pain in the ass. On the other hand I hope to get cool job by the start of a summer, so we will see

I live in Germany, so the shipping costs shouldn't be too bad...
But yeah, since I already have three other trade thingies to finish (and a very busy year starting), I'll first do those and then look if I've got time! But I really think that would be fun

Ok, then. Sounds good
But I would be pretty much busy in next few months, I am graduating from school, so I don't know if it will be ok before June
