Description I don't know what happened! I just wanted to draw a fan with sakura-flowers on it! I do love those flowers

Hmm, I think she needs more bling

I really do hope this helps e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Vision
The composition of the fan in front of her face seems to invoke a message to me, which is always great in an image. To me, it kind of reminds me of a the middle eastern veil and the whole symbolism behind it and its relation to women.

Originality
*im sorry if this rating seems harsh* I really wish critiques didn't have an originality rating to them, cause i find that millenniums of human existence, and millions of art works produced, its really hard to be original in the contemporary era. With a ton of geisha works out there, and being a common subject in Japanese art, it would be a lie if i rated the Originality as high, and i do not wish to lie. And i wish to see you expand your portraits a bit more! Maybe a 3/4 perspective or an over the shoulder look? Her facial characteristics reminds me alot of your OC Maeryn xD

Technique
I really like the brushstrokes near the neck area, they have a very painterly quality about them, and its nice to see that creep along the chin / up to the eyes. I feel like maybe the kimono and the fan seems alittle bit simplistic, which can be a good quality, but it would have been great to see the brushworks of the face on to those as well. The details of the highlights of the hair and the sakura blossoms are also a nice touch.

Impact
Perhaps its the green eyes behind the fan that struck me the most. Are you familiar with the Afghan girl portrait? The whole veil symbolism thing and the green eyes reminded me of that portrait, which is one of my favorite portraits of all time.

Keep up the great work!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you! It is very helpful indeed.
About the originality, it truly isn't very original. I should make something other than portraits. I didn't even notice that her face-shape looked like Maeryn's, but now that you mention it, you're right. Damn. <___<

Afghan girl portrait? No I don't think so, do you have a link?

I'm very happy you like it and that you critiqued it! Thank you!

I love this! It's very different from what I usually find here on dA. You're creative - which is one of the most important, if not the most important, quality a good artist needs. You're also very good with details and colors, which together with the good techniques you have, makes the overall impression great!

Nice composition on the fan. I like how you have part of the face covered by her fan to add the mystery. You also did an nice job on her eyes and hair when it comes to details.

This is so beautiful! For something that was only supposed to be a fan, I think you've done an amazing job and you should be so happy with it! For me, the most striking part is her eyes - the colour complementarity is just perfect, and it really helps to show the strength inside this woman, and her ability as a seductress.

Beautiful detail in the fan, in her hair and in her hair trinkets. It's honestly just a wonderful picture, well done.

Thank you for your kind comment
I really like the complementary colours but I'm always a bit afraid that they won't work together. I'm very glad it does!

Thank you again

Domochevsky [2011-05-07 15:39:34 +0000 UTC]

Nah, that's just the right amount of bling. Could use a tad more pazazzle in the background though.

Pazazzle is a good word. Pazazzle. Pazazzle. Pazazzle. Pazazzle. Heh

And you're right, I just get lazy with backgrounds. Shame on me! D:

Thanks!

Bling is good, but I gotta say, as far as I'm concerned, 'tis the season for Sakura. I've been seeing those all over my town.

Render's pretty tight. How long did this take you?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Swevenzre In reply to mosobot64 [2011-05-06 07:06:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're beautiful It makes me so happy every time I see one, and luckily the people in my town like them as well!

Augh, that's always a difficult question. It took around 7 hours from I started it 'till I uploaded it, but I was only drawing for... 2-3 of them? I cooked dinner, watched tv, chatted with people, researched geisha stuff and other random, non-drawing stuff xD I rarely sit down and work intently, I'm always scattered all over the place.

*nostalgia attack*
the geisha was one of the first pictures i ever drew with serious intent, which eventually evolved into a love for the Japanese culture.

id love to leave a critique but im always scared that i might get too harsh ><

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Swevenzre In reply to meehobs [2011-05-05 23:18:48 +0000 UTC]

I love Japan, I went to a.. folk school I think the English term is, which was inspired by Japan. So we learned martial arts and a bit of Japanese. It was awesome. I even got to go to Japan for 11 days

Ooooh, that would be cool! Don't worry about being too harsh, I can take it. I love getting critiques, I learn so much from them. So, if you want to, please do!

meehobs In reply to Swevenzre [2011-05-05 23:43:03 +0000 UTC]

That sounds fun!
Its good to hear that! I sometimes feel that people forget what a "Critique" is, and always expect positive feedback, which is great, but the purpose is to provide constructive criticism to help improve the artist, not to hurt their feelings xD.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Swevenzre In reply to meehobs [2011-05-06 07:15:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, so true! Criticisms are for the good AND bad feedback. Many just want their ego stroked which is a pity. I critiques, they can show that someone cared enough to actually *look* at the art, instead of just passing over it.
