Nice work, Stacy! Like that designwork! I take it that this is something like scratchboard work..

yes, it's a lot like scratchboard in that it has a black top layer that can be scratched off. The difference is, the white underneath is like plaster, you can scrape at it, recolor it, ink it, etc and keep scratching into it to reveal the white again. It really is a lot of fun!

I would think that the paint would soak into that white layer once the black top layer was removed. Or, isn't it that porous?

Sya In reply to patrx [2006-04-11 22:06:04 +0000 UTC]

it IS a little porous, and dark paint does tend to stain the white a tad. But remarkably, it's usually not the deep. I can even go over it with india ink and can scratch another white layer into it if I've made a mistake. So yeah, that's why i like it so much I guess. It's like scratchboard with an undo feature.

LOL Good one....never tried the scratchboard or that other 'board'. My 6th grade teacher was quite an artist and introduced us to the multiply colored layers and then scratching through to the particular color to produce a picture. She later became the head of the art department at the University of Mary here in Bismarck. I don't know if she is still alive or not. The last time I saw any of her art was back in 1971 at a juried exhibition. Guess I had some stiff competition with the bacteria...and petri dishes. I've been having some fun finding more interesting images as seen through the microscope. Your little exercise has gotten my interest up in playing more with the edit window. Love the dragon in the last journal entry. My sister's neighbor would love those dragons of yours.

Let your sister's neighbor know that I am currently taking on commissioned work I'd love to make one fore her, any color she'd like!

I remember doing those colored layer scratchings back in the day! Fun fun! Oh yeah, I'm glad you've been inspired by the petri dish contest. It's been on my mind a lot lately too! Interesting for sure!

I'll have to send her that pix of "Lecher'' the dragon you had in your journal. I haven't spoken with that couple for several years, but my niece worked for him at the newspaper last year.

Do you bake that clay when you're done with the molding? I'm not up on those types of clay and their use. Have you ever used grounding wire for you armatures? Radio Shack has some heavy gauge aluminum wire that might work for stiffening your armature...it's light and easy to cut, too. I kind of got into radio electronics hobbying for a while and had antennae all over the house...LOL

I have 6 of those ''petri dish'' images posted so far and a combo pix of all of them in the piece, "Under the Microscope II" [link] I still have to figure out how that fellow got the radial branching effect... Guess I need more practice in the edit window...LOL

Wow, that's amazing work! -^^- I like how you picked the colours for the piece. It's very breath-taking. Very well done! For some reason.. it kind of reminds me of Greek art. :S But maybe that's just me.

so let me wrap my brain around this..you paint the block colors on the etch out the 'white'? whit what? *guesses wood carving tools* watch..your gonna say a swiss army knife! lol...anyways..I think this is very cool. it reminds me of the 'doodles' I used to get in trouble for drawing in class when I should of been 'paying attention'

Sya In reply to miskis [2006-01-03 14:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, claybord is... well, it's pretty much like it sounds, a clay board. When you paint or ink over the surface, it can be removed with a scratch tool to reveal the white underneath.

Basically, this was just a doodle to experiment with the medium. Glad you like it
