Description

tl;dr: I'm getting to play in Magic Cowboy, a tabletop campaign my friends run that I've been eavesdropping on for over a year and I'm so excited aaaaaaAA!!!!

For those not in the know, my character Sapphique Llangollen is my player character for a tabletop campaign I'm in- Mystic Detective: Case of the Soothsayer! However, she doesn't look quite like this in Mystic Detective. Detective is a prequel campaign to my friends' ongoing and near-finished campaign, and it explores the detective work of one of the villain's backstory characters, Lucius Castellano, and his associates. My Sapphique is no detective. She's a scientist studying magic in the Runic Church of Archons until her life gets turned upside down when she begins having visions of a killer stalking and murdering people and she reluctantly joins the case investigating the crimes, despite her intense desire to keep the potentially heretical visions a secret.

The source of these visions was a complete mystery to her and her beloved mentor Desiree at the beginning of the case, but out of character? We as players know exactly where these powers come from, and the characters are beginning to figure it out.
In this setting, there are six powerful demons called Pyre Lords. They exist outside of the material plane, and they can only interact with our plane through their puppeted servants: vampires. Vampirism is a disease that slowly eats away at your soul and aligns you to the Pyre whose vampirism you caught, and when you die to it, your corpse becomes a vampire. An empty puppet the Pyre can use to enact their will.
One of the six Pyres- Rochtipectipal, the Pyre Lord of War (Rocky for short)- was slain over a thousand years ago in a travel plane between plane, the Crossroads. In Detective's recent history, people discovered a way to siphon bits of his power to create supersoldiers in horrific human experimentations, and one of those supersoldiers has escaped containment. The murders we're investigating in Detective serve two purposes for the supersoldier: revenge on the people who tormented them, and a way to "bring back the voices", or the influence of Rocky that they lost when the supersoldiers were brought to the Northern hemisphere. That is... the murders are in service of a ritual whose aim is to turn my Sapphique into an avatar of the Pyre Lord of War. Even without the ritual completed, from its start Sapph has been permanently changed with the grafting of a small bit of demonic magic, which is what causes her visions.

Sixty years later, in Magic Cowboy, Sapph shows up as an NPC. An old woman who aids the Cowboy crew with a safe house and decades of intel on their enemies in the North. At one point the boys were faced with the desperate need to move a large number of people over a great distance, necessitating they punch a new entrance into the Crossroads. This hadn't been done in thousands of years, so they put their greatest magical geniuses on the job: Sapph, Desiree, Sarah (a young witch out of time thanks to some time traveling shenanigans- it's complicated), and Erickson (the young reincarnation of Sapph's dead husband Lucius that nobody knows is a reincarnation- it's complicated). The group gradually realizes that punching a hole into the Crossroads will be more complicated than they thought. They need a set of magically aligned anchors within the Crossroads and without it... and the only thing in the Crossroads other than a giant field of bones is Rochtipectipal. ...the source of Sapph's powers.
The party completes the ritual from the Soothsayer case sixty years ago to make Sapph powerful enough to serve as that magical anchor, with modifications so Rocky's power doesn't corrupt and consume her, and in completing it, she becomes a vampire lord. A new type of vampire with some of the power of a Pyre and a will of their own, capable of making vampires that retain their sentience and personhood. Desiree, her mentor, is also a vampire lord, as is CJ, one of the Cowboy crew. It's only by virtue of CJ's magical expertise that they're able to safely complete the ritual at all. :3

---

All of this has been long since established in Cowboy. However, one thing is new.
Cowboy has two players and the DM who runs a DMPC to round out and assist the party when they need it- and one of those players got herself kicked from the game. I was invited to level up Sapph to join the party for the last five sessions of the campaign and I'm stoked as hell. Cowboy was in person before but we'll be moving online with me joining, so the art here is a Foundry (a virtual tabletop) icon for the game.

I've played two sessions so far and I've absolutely lost my mind. I've had such an absurd amount of fun. I love my friends and I love their characters, and I've loved this story since I first started bothering Talicor about it nearly two years ago. It feels like... getting to perform onstage with your favorite artist?? I've sat and listened in on this campaign for a year and a half. It's wild to get to actually interact with these characters. It's incredible. :3
