Description Series: -Danger, Deceit-: An Avatar: the Last Airbender Post-War Fic

Name: 心爱 (Priya*) [प्रिय - Beloved] of 段家族 (Tuan Clan)
Age: 19
Affiliation: Fire Nation, of the Noble House of Tuan
Service: Fire Nation Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Staff Assistant, secretary (Northern Continental Region)
Ability: Earthbending, based on firebending forms

The Tuan clan is composed of two main branches: in the Fire Nation homeland, they have considerable influence in the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs; the Continental branch, in the last years of Azulon’s rule, took up administration and governorship of northern Earth Kingdom territories and implemented some of the most draconian occupation measures in the war’s history.

Priya's father is the Minister of Education and Examinations (Interior) and though he hails from the Continental branch of the clan, Priya was schooled at the Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girls in the capital. She placed in the top ten in the national civil service exam at age 17, and was expected to enter service in the Ministry of Ceremonies, but elected to take a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She is an earthbender, an ability she has kept mostly under the radar for much of her life; because she had to adapt her own training to the firebending-based curricula of her schooling, her style is not geared toward massive movements of earth (she has trouble moving rocks bigger than a large melon ), but more targeted flinging of stones like missiles. While self-study in earthbending forms from books has helped her, Priya hopes that her job will take one day her to the Continent so that she can learn from a proper earthbending instructor.

Priya is widely rumored to be a bastard child from an affair on either her mother or father's part; no one is certain, but that doesn't stop the gossip.

*Hindu name - because it's pretty (and I'm shallow).

Loc is the clan leader, and a clan covers a wide range of kinship ties, so he could be as distant a relation as fourth cousin.

Dad's. Really the only way something like that would be accepted.

I love the fact that she's curvy and full, not full as in fat, but full as in just right, there aren't many OC's like that, a lot of them have that hour-glass shape you know? But she's just right, not too skinny which is something that's awesome.

Thanks! I taught myself drawing from anime, and you rarely see attractive voluptuous women in that medium - I've been practicing so I can draw women more in my preferred aesthetic.

Oh, she's pretty! I really like her backstory.

I think Toph would be willing to give her a hand, don't you?

sylvacoer In reply to LadySuzaku [2010-04-29 03:17:37 +0000 UTC]

I... don't think Toph's teaching style would be quite appropriate for Priya. She is literally a lady, something she takes quite seriously because of the rumors about her birth - therefore, she's paranoid about associating with people who are perceived as crude or nouveau riche. It's not fair, but that's how it goes.

LadySuzaku In reply to sylvacoer [2010-04-29 03:21:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, Toph is from one of the most well-known noble family's in the Earth Kingdom. She may be willing to compromise with her.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to LadySuzaku [2010-04-29 03:24:49 +0000 UTC]

... "Toph" and "compromise" should never be in the same sentence, unless the latter is immediately preceded by "would never."

Aaaaand... cooperating with a someone directly responsible for causing the Fire Nation's "defeat" right after the War miiiiight be a bit troublesome for a scion of a house that administers Fire Nation occupation over Earth Kingdom territory. Just because Zuko says "love and peace" doesn't mean everyone's going to beat their swords into plowshares right off - there's a century of genocidal war to sort through, after all!

Eartbending fire style. I better that has some interesting mechanics.
The pose reminds me of hindu statues, mainly the hand pose.

Well done as always

She's miming the "abhāya mudrā" of the "protective/benevolent" Buddha (since her name's Hindu, thought I might as well). And yar, just like Aang said in episode one, teaching bending based on a style not intended for the element cripples the effective power of the bending - I just figured that there should not be such a limitation on the ability of the individual to specialize/adapt.

i've got a friend that looks just like her. guess what her name is?

i really love the coloring on this one - beautiful!

although the pose is a goddess/blessing pose and not a strong earthbending pose. and henna dyed hair is distinctly reddish/orangeish in hue.

otherwise, this is gorgeous!

sylvacoer In reply to Sepulchral-Roses [2010-04-03 13:26:11 +0000 UTC]

Xin-ai? ('cuz that the Chinese reading of the characters I used - since Avatarverse script is Chinese, not Sanskrit)

And that is the point - her style is based on firebending/dance moves originating in the Fire Nation. That is why she's not a strong earthbender. Also, I based the pose on the abhāya mudrā because I was referring back to the Hindu origin of her name.

Henceforth, Avatarverse henna dies hair purple because I say so (WHEE, ABUSE OF BOTANICAL PROPERTIES NOT OUTLINED BY WORD OF GOD! ). Or, I'll just say she dyes her hair using the crushed shells of Avatarverse's version of the purple dye murex.

Sepulchral-Roses In reply to sylvacoer [2010-04-03 19:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Haha is that really what it says? I can't read Chinese, though I can read Sanskrit/any Devnagiri Script. Not that I generally know what it means, but I can read and pronounce! But no, I've got a friend that looks like her, whose name is Priya. Co-inky-dink!
You knew/looked up/figured out the name of the mudra! That's pretty considerable! The reason I personally knew that the abhaya mudra was a protecting/blessing gesture is because I dance two of the eight Indian Classical dance forms, which is what some of the Fire Nation lore comes from. Pretty cool to see things used in the Avatarverse that I see on a day to day basis.

Purply henna!

sylvacoer In reply to Sepulchral-Roses [2010-04-03 22:28:52 +0000 UTC]

I know Avatar is a pastiche of Asian motifs and lore, but I, being the geek I am, love to dig into the roots of where the stuff comes from/use research to justify the crap I invent to enlarge the world in fandom.

Ooo, Indian dance - that's awesome! I took hula as a kid, and some bellydancing in college - that's another source for her pose.

I would totally use purply henna to dye my hair!

Sepulchral-Roses In reply to sylvacoer [2010-04-04 04:30:27 +0000 UTC]

don't tell anyone that, but I do it too - my last Avatar OC was called "Naina", which is the Hindi work for eye[s].

Ahahaha! Bellydancing and the Abhaya Mudra! You have just made my day.

I wouldn't dye mine [goodness, that'd require lots of bleach pre-dye] but if I did, I'd find me a strain of purple henna!

I'm glad someone else realizes that using alternate forms for bending is not very effective.

With a back story that detailed, would you happen to be doing anything else with the character?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to Joran-Antilles [2010-03-31 19:05:33 +0000 UTC]

It only makes sense - Aang said it right out in the first episode when Katara asked him to teach her, so I figured I should at least follow that law of the Avatarverse.

Ah-yup - Imma planning a Mai/Jet post-war AR. First part is Mai-centric, in the Fire Nation, and Priya is one of the players.

DarthYan In reply to sylvacoer [2010-09-27 15:02:27 +0000 UTC]

beeftony [2010-03-31 08:56:43 +0000 UTC]

I like that she's barefoot in this picture. It really makes her look down to earth. *is shot*

Puns aside, I really enjoy this. Her hair is especially noteworthy, since it doesn't seem to be any color we saw on the show. It looks almost purple, but that could just be the way you shaded it.

A lot of the Fire Nation names were Indian in nature. So this actually fits perfectly.

Precision targeting seems like a useful skill for earthbending that other earthbenders haven't really been able to develop (aside from Toph, and even then she just hurls things in people's general direction). If she doesn't pull a knife outline at least once I'm going to feel disappointed.

Oh, and much love for the curves. Even under the robe, she still looks magnificent.

Great job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to beeftony [2010-03-31 14:36:37 +0000 UTC]

It's purplish, and I'm going to say it's because she's used a plant-dye similar to henna to color it [link] (again, basing parts of her character on Indian culture). Why? She thought it looked pretty (she's also one of the first of my OCs to use makeup, though she doesn't overuse it - she just likes using color to enhance her features).

That's a good point, and one I'm going for - firebending looks powerful, but it's most effective in precision application, so I decided she took the best of firebending to tailor her earthbending. Unfortunately, firebending doesn't do much to teach you how to manipulate solid forms into something resembling a bladed weapon. Besides, she throws things - she doesn't close the distance, so there's little point (ha, got my own pun in there ).

Huzzah for curvy women!
