Description Did they beat the drums slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march
as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the "Last Post" and chorus,
Did the pipes play "The Flowers of the Forest"?

---

1918
On the 11th day of the 11th month, at the 11th hour, the guns of World War I silenced over the fields of France.

In memory of the fallen, that we might be worthy.

Lyrics: "The Green Fields of France (No Man's Land)" - Dropkick Murphys

But here in this graveyard, its still no-man's-land

The countless white crosses lay mute where they stand,

To man's blind indifference to his fellow man,

As a whole generation we're butchered and damned....

I don't like to pick over details, but well ... just one piece of criticism is the corporal's (?) rifle seems to be ... twisted or "broken", somehow.

Other than that, I'm moved to tears, seeing this and remembering the lyrics of "Green Fields of France", particularly the verse "Have you left a wife or a seetheart behind ?"

Wow, excellent picture! I just listened to Celtic Thunder's version of this song, and I love it.

Your artwork fits the song very well and evokes the meaning expressed in it. I can see you have a great respect for those who died in the wars. Great job!

thank you very much! the celtic thunder version is beautiful, but i think i prefer the raw emotion in the dropkick murphys version - they have a song called "the last letter home" that never fails to make me cry.

Cool. I'm a bit of a Thunderhead, so it's prob'ly going to remain my favorite version, but I'll definitely check out the Dropkick Murphys sometime.

Just noticed... his rank is wrong. Granted, it's unsure what country and what service McBride belonged to (it's assumed British Army), but no matter what service, he wouldn't have two stripes.

Still, great job!

Nicely done!

The lyrics actually come from No Man's Land, a poem by Eric Bogle.

whats a price of a mile
Hear the sound of a machinegun
Hear it echo in the night
Mortals firing rains the scene
Scars the fields
that once were green

It's a stalemate at the frontline
where the soldiers rest in mud
roads and houses
all is gone
there is no glory to be won

know that many men will suffer
know that many men will die
half a million lives at stake
Ask the fields of Passchendaele

And as the night falls the general calls
and the battle carries on and on
How long?
What is the purpose of it all
What's the price of a mile?

Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army on the march
Long way from home
Paying the price in young men's lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out

Thousands of machineguns
Kept on firing through the night
Mortars blazed and wrecked the scene
Guns in the fields that once were green

Still a deadlock at the frontline
Where the soldiers die in mud
roads and houses since long gone
still no glory has been won
know that many men has suffered
know that many men has died

Six miles of ground has been won
Half a million men are gone
And as the men crawled the general called
And the killing carried on and on
How long?
What's the purpose of it all?
What's the price of a mile?

Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army on the march
Long way from home
Paying the price in young men's lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out

Young men are dying
They pay the price
Oh how they suffer
So tell me what's the price of a mile

That's the price of a mile.

Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army on the march
Long way from home
Paying the price in young men's lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out

*cries*

I listened to the music while looking at this picture. I did shed a tear.

The first world war was truely meaningless.

World war two had a meaning. But World war one, a whole generation slaughtered... Over a single austrian PRINCE. In countries not even related to the assasination.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sylvacoer In reply to Tobias-Phealin [2007-12-05 10:30:50 +0000 UTC]

It had to do with the system of alliances that the assassination set in motion, and a lot to do with Kaiser Wilhelm's belief that he could use his superior land forces to negate the naval advantage the british had. Because chancellor bismarck was practically on his deathbed at this point (and because wilhelm didn't like him much to begin with), there wasn't anyone in Germany who really thought making the assassination of an ally a causus belli was a bad idea. there was also the issue of competing colonial interests.

but yes, it was very stupid, and it sowed the seeds for WWII. Have you read Erich Maria Remqrque's book, "All Quiet on the Western Front"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tobias-Phealin In reply to sylvacoer [2007-12-05 15:29:12 +0000 UTC]

No I havn't, but I do know a Young German Lieutenant by the Name of Adolph Hitler was gassed by the British, making him go partially insane. Which I guess only contributed to the rest of the insaneness.

I hope to read All quiet on the western front though. Yes.

Thank you. To really get an idea of the War, I would recommend reading "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque. He was a German soldier so it's fascinating getting the point of view from the other side of the trenches.
