This drawing is for my friend Sophie, who is a Charles Dickens scholar. I chose the book Henrietta is reading to Bronia - A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens - partially because of Sophie's area of study, partially because the short story "Merry Christmas, Auntie Henrietta" that was dedicated to her is inspired by A Christmas Carol.

Because Charles Dickens' books have a Victorian/Edwardian setting, I decided to draw them in steampunk/neoVictorian dresses with old fashioned furniture and curtains. It reminds me also of two of my favorite childhood books, namely Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery and the Samantha books from the American Girl line. I just learned to crochet so I am a step closer to building my own steam emporium

Henrietta is a nightmare (zmora) who lives in the Dark Forest and keeps an eye out on Bronia. Being unrelated to Bronia, she hates it when the little highlander girl refers to her as "auntie." One Christmas, Bronia invades her house and drags the Christmas spirit in; Henrietta later repays the favor by visiting "the lonely girl" on Christmas Eve. She is a minor character in The Lonely Girl and the Lonely Warrior, where she's portrayed as Bronia's protector and Baba Yaga's confident. She was meant to only be a minor joke character, but I will end up featuring her as a lead character in Daisy Book II.

As a nightmare, Henrietta has the power to turn into a bird, and yes, I will use this opportunity to promote the beautiful coloring of Henrietta's bird form my lovely beta-readers and made as well as one by Instagram colorosit Sabrina:
