Description I'm closing the year with reconstruction of the recently described diplodocid sauropod from the Morrison Formation, Kaatedocus siberi. Except for the data from the beautifully preserved skull and neck, this saurpod is reconstructed after its close relatives. Being close to the base of the clade Diplodocine, and therefore close relative of Apatosaurus, I made the body's proportions a mash-up of those of Diplodocus,Barosaurus and Apatosaurus. The dewlaps are speculative, same with the keratinous spikes in the dorsal part of the torso. The latter are based on fossil evidence from Diplodocus.

I consider this my most detailed drawing to date. There are literally hundreds of thousands, if not even million dots creating the image you see, and it's all hand made. It took me about 15 hours to finish this artwork.

David Bonadonna's illustration was not used as reference in any form.

Skeletal reconstructions of Diplodocus,Barosaurus and Apatosaurus by Scott Hartman were used as references for the reconstruction of the body of Kaatedocus.

Medium: Ink (+ digital editing on Photoshop).

Your patience is impressive. Those 15 hours payed off well, as this has come off as quite a great looking portrayal.

Either my patience is impressive, or I'm plain and simple insane. This, and having nothing better to do have led to most of my artworks.

Thanks!

Very good work, and excellent detail. Also, you say that the spikes are based off of fossil evidence from Diplodocus. Was that dinosaur preserved with those torso spines?

P.S.: Dammit, I re-read your comment and realized I completely misinterpreted it.

I know that this is an old post, but I though I should say this: there is a Diplodocus specimen preserving "spikes", but there's no real reason to think that they represent a mid-line structure ala iguanas as they are usually depicted (e. g. WWD) - they probably represent keratinous spines distributed all along the dorsal surface. Czerkas did not publish his quite made-up hypothesis in a peer-reviewed paper (which is truly sad since there's nothing formally published yet), and even if you read the report you'll see that he didn't present any solid argument backing up said idea.

TL; DR, the evidence favors this interpretation rather than anything else you see pretty much everywhere.

No problem! This makes sense. I always thought that most dinosaurs had more external adaptions than we knew. Speaking of which, have you heard of the book All Yesterdays by Darren Naish and John Conway? It talks about things like that.

Of course I've herd about All yesterdays, but unfortunately I don't own a copy of it. I hope that I'll get one in future. Unusual concepts in paleoart and the way prehistoric animals can be reconstructed are subjects discussed a lot in the paleoart community, and I'm relatively awared of this problems. It's indeed an interestin matter.

I always try to portrait dinosaurs as having some extra ornamentation when possible, yet I'm trying not to stretch it beyond the realms of possibility.

Yeah. I've ordered a copy, but (as usual) Amazon makes me impatient. Oh, well. I do like trying to imagine prehistoric animals realistically.
