Description My last monthly fanart of 2019; Haku from Spirited Away! I tried doing this in watercolours back in June, but it turned out horribly and I couldn't bring myself to post it. Luckily I took a picture of the finished pencil sketch and I managed to digitize it.
It's quite fitting actually that my last fanart of the year should be a "redemption" piece, since 2020 is to be the year where I redeem myself after the fiasco that was engineering.

As for the piece itself, fanart of Spirited Away tends to focus on Chihiro embracing a dragon Haku or walking along the train tracks, and I wanted to make something that stood out. And one of the scenes that still give me goosebumps is the bridge scene. It took me a really long time to realise that Haku is blowing dragon scales and I guess that implies he turned into a dragon at that point (which tbh would make for a hell of a distraction)

Anyway, I always appreciate feedback!

Oh my gosh, so pretty! I love color, so the really nice (almost glowing) shading effect of the background immediately pulled me in. It looks so nice, especially the gold-browns against the cooler cyans of the dragon spirit. You did good on this piece.

I saw you're looking for feedback - I mean, obviously, my first bit of feedback is that this is super cool and you did a great job on it. There's movement, and action, and the poses are dynamic and tell a story. Awesome awesome awesome.

If I had to say something critical, maybe one thing that jumps out at me is that despite there being line art beneath the painting, there edges of this piece feel a little soft (maybe it's the shading with a soft brush?). Maybe it's on purpose, but the only crisp and hard thing in the piece are the glowing dragon scales blowing in the wind. But I'm craving more of that throughout the rest of the artwork...

Again, lovely piece.  Hope my comment sparks some ideas to experiment with in your next project...and good luck with your art in the new year!

Thank you so much for the in depth feedback! I appreciate it tremendously

I agree that it is lacking in definition a little; I normally use line art extensively and this was meant to be an experiment in making a watercolour style digitally. I think it's largely a lack in contrast between Haku and the background and I'll keep it in mind the next time I do something like this.

Thanks again!

Fantastic work, Wickus! Even though it's digital, it still looks like a watercolor painting. The shading in Haku is beautiful and it lines up nicely with the petals.

Also, sorry to hear that engineering didn't work out for you. Hopefully 2020 will bring new aspirations and fulfillment. ^_^

Thank you so much, Tek
I'm glad to hear it looks like watercolours. Initially I couldn't figure out how to work with Clip Studio's watercolour brushes, because it doesn't work anything like actual watercolours XD

It was an interesting experience, definitely. It was definitely necessary, plus I made some awesome friends along the way.
Thank you so much!

Superb work. The shading especially got me, and Haku's rather ethereal look also is great
