Description Changing of the Guard Ceremony
Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA | October 31st, 2009
Nikon D90

Did you know?
The guard is changed every hour on the hour Oct. 1 to March 31 in an elaborate ritual. From April 1 through September 30, there are more than double the opportunities to view the change because another change is added on the half hour and the cemetery closing time moves from 5 to 7 p.m.

Intense. Β I didn't know that about the changing of the guard.Β  What is the tradition/reason behind the frequency of the changes?Β  [if you know]

tanikel In reply to KreepingSpawn [2014-04-01 20:26:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that there's a tradition to it.Β  Most likely just a health and morale thing.Β  Doing a precise march like that is taxing, I couldn't imagine how they do it day in and day out, especially adverse weather.Β

Fair enough.Β
Every hour/half-hour seems like a lot, but I'm sure if I had to do it, I'd be welcoming that changeover!

Oh yeah.Β  Twenty minutes of regular marching is more than enough for me.Β  I can barely concentrate enough with that.Β

Granted. Β But when it comes to weaponry, the Army uses precise definitions. Β A gun is a weapon with no rifling in the barrel, such as a howitzer or naval gun. Β Rifles are rifled. Β They are mutually exclusive terms.

They do and it's absolutely incredible. During a hurricane one year (I can't remember which) they were told that they didn't have to do the Changing of the Guard, but they refused the offer and kept on keeping watch throughout the entire hurricane!

Not sure if you are familiar with the honor guard, but they spend about 6 hours a day making sure their uniforms are crisp (to within 1/64"), their shoes are ready, and a lot more they don't tell us about.

The shape of the stock of this M14 has been modified: is this a custom model for the Guard?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

KamCzan In reply to mariorossi [2012-08-03 15:57:53 +0000 UTC]

This looks like M1 Garand, not M14. But that stock... hell, nice piece of wood.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pbohm In reply to KamCzan [2012-08-03 16:29:16 +0000 UTC]

It's an M-14 without the magazine, the M-1 Garand has a smooth wood upper hand guard

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KamCzan In reply to Pbohm [2012-08-03 18:31:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah maybe, but I don't think it is just ordinary rifle without magazine... I bet the magazine well is removed, or by other means closed.

Pbohm In reply to KamCzan [2012-08-03 18:43:41 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't be surprised if they did that for the "show" rifles.
