Commission for client in Belgium.She requested a Bear and an Otter, in a sort of circling position, done in a "tribal" style.
Due to my last "tribal" tattoo [the eagle] being stolen and used in a Video Game banner campaign without my consultation or permission, I am taking extra precautions with the heavy water marking. I realize it might not actually stop the theft, but the clear name reference lends to some good people to contact me about general art theft of my designs.
I enjoy working on this style, simply because I can "Zone out" while doing it. It's more about the form and flow then detail and draftsmanship. It's a pleasure to work on a variety of different styles.

So this sort of style isn't representative of any of the bands? Are there still any sort of rules a person should follow if they draw in this style?

This is not any Ethnic style. It was most noticeably created by Tattoo parlors and tattoo enthusiasts who wants "Native" like tattoos [Specifically Maori] but didn't have the skill or the rights to design in that style. If anything, this is more a contemporary design style trying to emulate an aboriginal style that failed- but in itself is pretty bombastic.

I never look at tattoos the same anymore when I see them. I personally only do hennah tattoos if I put a design on my skin and it's usually just my initials. But now whenever I see tattoos I just think "Gosh I hope that one isn't breaking any rules."

The tattoo culture is a very deep running one. There were some documented book o Russian tattoos that were common in Prisons... and the "language" they spoke. Some tattoos [Black Jaguar up the arm] are classics, and usually have specific meaning in the tattoo culture. I think they have published books about the contemporary designs and their meanings.

First of all, it looks fantastic!
Second, I've noticed indeed how easy it is to steal tribal art even with watermarks.
A quick thought entered my mind when reading your comments for this piece. Perhaps if you made the tribal itself as a watermark for a random picture. Wouldn't that make it a pain in the ass to steal?

The issue isn't how it's watermarked. Like I said, the theft is inevitable- but the water marking makes the identification of the piece easier to isolate. So when someone stumbles upon the same picture, they can easily google my name and contact me directly.
Sadly, those who steal the images are usually folks with little artistic skill, so they find the need to appropriate other's works in order to hide their inadequacies. Those with a little tech know-how can easily get around any watermark produced.
