Description This is my little tribute to one of my personal favorite heroes ever.

A little while back, a friend of mine was telling a story that he had heard from another friend of his about the wonderful Kawadelakala- the first wolf who shed his skin and became the first of the Kingcome Inlet people.
Now, after he finished telling that story, I began to bombard him with multiple questions and inquiries. Amongst whatever character descriptions and the sort he could provide, I also asked if there were any variations/similar stories. He told me a few, and right when he was getting annoyed with me (or at least I can assume so because I *was* very annoying), his father smacked him upside the head and told him to hush and answer my questions because “…can’t you see she plans on drawing something?”

Anyhow, I am also a big fan of Francis Dick and her work, and lately I was dabbling in it again and figured that it must be some sort of sign. So I thought it was time I drew something that reflected the story of Kawadelkala. I know this isn’t accurate to *his* specific story (as when told to me, he was the first wolf and man, and so no women yet) but I did hear some variations and some other stories and let’s just say I pieced together a scenario from it all:
A man, transforming from a white wolf on a cold night, and a woman who witnesses his transformation.
Of course, he draws upon the power of the Dog Star to help him in his transformation.

And that is all I have to say.

Acrylic paint and gouache on white Canson paper.

This is sooo beautiful ... I love how everything seems to flow as if by magic, the hair, the air, the welkin and the humans and the wolf in a symbiotic magical dance ... brilliant work !!!

Thank you so much- just one correction, he isn't a wolf, he's an Albino Dog Demon.

Hmm... the man has white hair... the girl has black hair... somehow my brain is drawing connections to the subjects of your last submission... hmmm... (of course it could just be my brain on InuYasha).

Yeah, but this guy's a wolf, right? I mean, technically they're both big white canines, but... Ok. So it is Sesshomaru and Rin.

WOW! You really DIDN'T read what I typed up then!
How did you get "Sesshoumaru" form "Kawadelakala"? I know you probably have never heard of who he was, but you can google him and find out the entire history of the natives and his children. And his Younger borther Kwalili. He is not some ficitonal charcater or Japanese, he is the first of th Kingcom inlet.

Arg... please forgive my confusion... *laughs nervously* I read your reply when I was really tired and I thought you were agreeing with my suspicion rather than agreeing that my brain was making things up! lol... wow... that's awkward... sorry about that. No more late-night dA commenting for me!

Actually, believe it or not, I have a curfew when it comes to posting.. anything after 1 am is not permited unless it is followed by "".
My brian stops functioning after an entire day at the studio, or giving lectures.
But you should google up the name of that fellah anyhow. I am going to be living in that province, and hopefully going to see the Queen Charlotte Islands soon. THey even made a howle book about him... which is an excillent reminder to pick it up when I go. XD
I want to read the adventure of Kawadelakala and Kwalili. XD

You give lectures? What sort of lectures? If you don't mind me asking.

tarkheki In reply to axcho [2008-02-28 19:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Not at all:
Comparative Mythology and structural mythology, Characters in Cultural context, Symbolisms and Archetypes within various stories, Native mythology and the different between Western Mythologies, Cultural clashes- Minorities vs. Majorities, Animation, History of animation, History of Japanese art and animation, Traditional medicines, and Traditional medicines and ceremonies and their parallels in various cultures.
It's a long list, and I usually take up more lectures when the need arises.

Although I love animation, I find myself drawn to your Native American pieces the most. I can't believe this is traditional media; I thought for sure this was done in Illustrator. This is composed so well with the weight of the sky blue pulling you into the blacks... and nevermind Brother Bear, your work is far better and true-to-form!

Thanx!
I was going for something magical but calm and peacefull... I never associated magic with big bangs and loud noises, but suttle starlight and soft jiggling of silver bells.
