I am envious of your skill with piping. And however to you manage to secure your leg-belt so as to prevent it from falling down o'er your knee?
* Shard smiles good-naturedly.
The costume is very well crafted, but of course I have come to expect no less from your skill with fabric. I very much like the pose that you have chosen; it appears to me that, whilst lounging against the post-box, a friendly gust of wind might have thought to knock Arrow's hat from his head, and that he had reached up to prevent its falling just in the instant that the camera lens snapped. I am also very much delighted by the contrast of red edging upon blue cloth, for it is not a combination I see very often.

Sewing things by hand, it's easy to slip some piping in as you go. I don't do so well with piping when it is done with a machine. And as for that leg belt. UGH. It was driving me NUTS. It kept falling down, so I finally just did a couple of quick stitches to hold it to the pants at the point of the buckle. It worked wonders and enabled my adjustments of its placement to hold for longer than a couple steps.
And yes! In the comic, Arrow's hat has a tendency to fall off quite easily, and quite against my intentions, when wearing the wig, it does so in real life as well. *laughs* Whenever I leaned back or craned my head, it would pop off, making me self-conscious about moving freely, so I decided to just hold onto it so that the pose itself would stay more natural.
I've really grown to love Arrow's sense of fashion, simple as it may be. The warm, hearty fabrics, the simple cuts, it makes for a really comfortable ensemble to wear, and the slate blue with burgundy piping looks quite fetching to my eye. <3

How did you design Arrow's hat? It's just so cool, I'd wear one everywhere.

XD I had a lot of fun making Arrow's outfit because he made his own clothes, so it gave me a little bit of lee-way for small errors. He doesn't own many clothes, but his stuff is nicely designed because he makes his own patterns. ^^
As for his hat - do you mean the pattern? I drew it out in the print version of Chapter One! It's made of buckram, faux-suede, stitched ribbon and brass buttons.

It took approximately 3 weeks or so to make it? It was one of my faster costumes. But, to be fair, I powered through a big chunk of it during a movie marathon with my friends XD
And yup, Arrow is the only one I have a costume for - and likely the only one I will make a costume for, since there's really no one else from the cast I can even begin to approximate!
I hope to keep hosting meet-ups! I also encourage others to hold them, even if I can't attend!

Did you get to see the Fish Toss? That's a HUGE part of Pike's Place Market. ^^ And did you enjoy the crepe? I love the spinach, chicken and swiss with white sauce. Sooo tasty.
Hm, mellow sounds kind of dull. Do you think it's something that you'll want to do again? But yay for new readers!

We didn't this time, but I've seen it before. ^^ The crepe was pretty good - surprisingly healthy for what I was expecting. But that was a good thing, since I had nothing but chocolate for breakfast that morning @ 3 @;
I was also tempted by the ratatouille one, and the nutella for the sweet options.
It was disappointingly small. I actually didn't have anyone show up for it, I just managed to attract a couple of people while waiting in line for crepes, because they wanted to know what my costume was from, and so I handed out my freebies to them and one of them bought a book from me. XD But yes! I intend to keep trying, and hopefully they'll keep growing! Who knows, maybe someday I'll hold a little OtherworldsComics convention! *laughs*

Mmm, chocolate for breakfast... ^ 3 ^ Yums. I've been wanting to try the ratatouille one for a while, but I'm not big on eggplant, so I've been holding off. And I wanna try the banana's foster, for a sweet option.
I would totally attend an OtherworldsComics convention! ^^ I'm still sorry I couldn't make it, though. Was looking forward to it, too. Gonna do my best to make it to the next gathering! And hopefully have a costume to wear, too! >.> I'm thinking of bringing my fiance to PAX next year because he's talked about going and he's a pretty avid gamer, so it might be good for him. Not sure yet, though.

tarorae In reply to Ankhbearer [2012-09-04 15:28:52 +0000 UTC]
I like eggplant if it's ripe and cooked right. I also have an irrational conception that I will like Ratatouille because of what's in it and how it looks (largely due to Pixar's Ratatouille film) but in real life, it's often disappointing *laughs*
I totally want to just make crepes at home too, now. I do, but not often. My husband makes crepes really well, but he's gluten intolerant, and I'm not, so really, I should just whip up a batch for myself one of these days > 3 >;
Haha! Well, let's see... What all would an OWC-Con entail? I'd have a costume contest, for sure! And games, like comic trivia, Pirate's Dice, Letters of Marque, maybe a murder mystery? I'd love to have a Marauder's party too, with music and a banquet Galley-style. *dreams big*
Yeah, I'd still really like to meet up with you! Any chance you could attend SteamCon in Seattle in October, or TsukinoCon in Victoria next Feb? Those are the next two on my agenda. ^ u ^
Oh, if your man's an avid gamer, he'd probably love PAX. I'm more of an observer than a gamer myself, so there wasn't a whole heck of a lot for me to do there. I bought myself a few things - plushie companion cube, and dice earrings, and solid metal balanced d6s... But for the most part, it was a cosplay event for me. ^^
Speaking of cosplay - what are you planning on doing?

Ankhbearer In reply to tarorae [2012-09-04 19:47:29 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the Pixar film made me want to try it, too. Just haven't done it yet. Haven't tried the crepe thing at home yet... Must look into recipes now....
Gotta have a Captain's Table to invite people to for super extra tasty foods during the Galley-style banquet. Or for guest speakers or something? And have a raiding party between two groups! Like cosplay chess but a little different and the winning team gets prizes! Lol, how about a scavenger hunt?
I can try to make it to SteamCon in October, but to get to Victoria and TsukinoCon, I'm going to have to get my passport. Which is something I need to do anyway... I can't make any promises though because this new job is at a hospital and I'm working a variable On Call shift so I have no guarantee of days off or getting called in. But I will try!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he'd love it, too. I game a little too, but not nearly as much as he does and I'm more limited to handheld systems, anyway. ^^ I prefer them to consoles. But I LOVE a good dealers room, so that's always a bonus. XD
As for cosplay, I want to and I have ideas of characters and such, but I don't sew, so it's a little bit tricky. Also, I'm not in very good shape at the moment and that makes me uber self conscious and touchy about it.. -.- I'm a touch neurotic, really. I REALLY want to do an Eternal Sonata cosplay and dress up as Frederick Chopin, as well as a Kingdom Hearts cosplay. Ah, dreams. ^^

Crepe's are pretty straight forward to make - it helps if you have a proper crepe pan, mind you. My husband makes wonderful crepes!
SO MANY GOOD IDEAS!! I've started a file and copied all of these down. I think someday, when Weaponry is big enough to sustain it, I'll hold some sort of event, even if it's only as a part of another convention I'm attending. I shall plot and scheme, and someday, it'll happen!
If you do make it to SteamCon - I'll have a table in Artist's Alley, so please do come by and hang out! I'd love to meet with you <3 TsukinoCon is an anime convention, but it's got some real personality and I usually do a bunch of panels and have a table here too. We'll also be having a Weaponry MeetUp at TsukinoCon as we've got a small handful of people doing some cosplays, so we want to get a photoshoot in.
Congrats at you new job, (again) it sounds like a great opportunity! Since you're on call, I'll hold out more hope for SteamCon for now, but we'll see what happens.
PAX didn't really have a huge dealers room, just kind of...different companies had merch at their booths. I bought myself a little plushie companion cube, some dice earrings and a pair of metal d6s.
Not sewing is a bit of an issue - depending on who you choose to cosplay. Some costumes are better made cut-and-paste style, others you can modify existing garments, and others you really just need to build from the ground up. Kingdom Hearts would be fun! I used to make embroidered velvet pumpkin patches for the Halloween Town Sora from the first game to sell on my Etsy. ^^ I have a bunch of cosplays still on my dream list too: Hexadecimal, Cassandra from Soul Calibur 3, Meryl Stryfe from Trigun, and Melfina from Outlaw Star. I'd also LOVE to put together a Crystal Chronicles group... O u O

I have an idea about how to make crepes in a standard nonstick frying pan, which I learned from watching Food Network's Worst Cooks in America. XD I just have to take the time to try it.
Maybe start as a panel or something at an existing convention and work upwards from there? >.> See, now you have me plotting and planning, too! lolol
I wanted to hit up SteamCon last year, but I didn't have the money and my fiance baulked at the idea of large crowds in an unfamiliar place. Which makes me question how he'd handle PAX... Meh. I'll figure that one out later. I have to wait and see what my schedule and paydays are going to be first... After that, I should (hopefully) be able to make some more solid plans about SteamCon. Maybe I'll just go to the dmv and get my extended driver's license for the time being and work on the passport a little later... Hm... That way I should have more money and possibly more time to work with for TsukinoCon.
And thank you! I'm really excited to have gotten it! Not overly thrilled about the variable, but I'll take what I can get for the time being.
Yeah, PAX is definitely more of a gamer promo type gathering... And I totally want a companion cube plush...
See, it's kind of funny. I can draw decently well, I can do makeup pretty well, I can hand sew plushies that I make up the patterns for, but I can not sew with a sewing machine to save my life.. I may end up commissioning my mother to do it for me. XD Or my best friend. I LOVE Outlaw Star!! ^^ Just had to throw that in there. I want to do a Link cosplay, too. And Cooking Mama since I ADORE the games. Nerd that I am. I also wanna do Azula from Avatar: Last Air Bender and maybe Katara. Or Sumi. Thought about doing a Vash from Trigun or a Millie. Not sure if I'm tall enough for either of them, though. ^^ There are several others, but I can't think of them right now...

Oh hey, that's a good idea... Maybe I'll ask if I can do one at TsukinoCon... I might start with a combo panel or something like How to Make Webcomics or something...
Oh, have you been to SteamCon before? This is my first year there, and I've no sense of how big it is... I've heard that it's the first Steampunk convention in NA though? And yah PAX was stupid-crowded. Like there were some places where you couldn't get through without a crowbar. Like, being dressed as Cammy was really helpful because I could use my gauntlets to prise my way through.
Oh, well if you can hand sew, you're golden! I don't use a machine for my cosplays either! I recently got an 1886 singer, and I've started using that for some of the straight lines and hems and things, to nip off a bit of the time involved, but the majority of the stuff I make is hand sewn. So yeah, if you have those artistic skills under your belt, of course you can cosplay! I encourage iiiiit.
Yay! It's hard to find folk that know Outlaw Star! If you ever wanted to do a character from Outlaw Star to go with my Melfina, we should totally photoshoot together at some con or another! My friend is a perfect Milly; she and I have the perfect height ratios Yah, I've had to basically limit myself to a few more and then just work on upgrading and resizing and maintaining some of my favourite cosplays... I have run out of room in my storage closet @ , @;

The girls that write Teahouse have a webcomic type panel, so that's a pretty groovy idea. ^^
I haven't been to SteamCon yet, I found it early last year. But I wanted to go cause I love Steampunk oodles! I even want to have touches of it in my wedding. ^3^ Mwaha! I've heard of Steampunk conventions in the NW but in Canada, not here. Or maybe it's more towards the middle of Canada.... I don't really remember. Yeah, Sakuracon can be pretty tightly packed at times. I just put my arms up and kind of push through with my friends hooked on to me in a sort of conga line. Or, if I have to pee really bad or have somewhere I really need to be, people tend to part like the Red Sea for me. It's actually pretty funny when I think back on the times it's taken place. XD
Really, you hand sew everything? Sweet! Do you have a special kind of stitching that you use or what? Now I have to learn how to read a pattern. That, my mother CAN teach me because she's done loads of sewing in the past. And oooooh and antique Singer! With the rocking peddle and everything?? Darn, I'm jealous, now!
I love Outlaw Star! My fiance doesn't like it, though. XD All well. But yeah, it's been ages since I've seen it, though. Sadness all over. Height wise, I'm between 5'8" and 5'9", so I could do taller characters with a little shoe help and not look funny with platforms or something. But I went to a cosplay panel and they said that people should try to find characters that fit their body structure and such... Which makes it kind of hard for me to want to cosplay some svelt looking character when I'm on the rounder side. But, I plan on fixing that, so it should be fine. ^^ Yeah, I live in a one bedroom apartment with my fiance and we're already having a touch of an issue with storage... Might have to hold off a big longer on the cosplay... O.o

OH MAN. This message got burried in my replies, so I just found it now! (I'm SO SORRY for the lag!)
We'll be going to Steamcon again this year - so hopefully I'll finally get to hang out with you. <3
Yah, hand sewing is my preferred method. My 1886 vintage Singer is a hand-crank. I use that for some straight lines and hems, but anything that requires detail, precision or hidden stitching I do by hand. As for whyat stitches - it's all self taught, so I just have the names I made up for them (some of which may be defined totally differently in professional tailoring?) - Backstitch, running stitch, pick-stitch and blanket stitch are my usuals. I just learned a millinary stitch called the herrongbone, but I haven't used it yet; supposedly it's well suited for trim.
And yah, I'm super pale, and when I try to wear darkening make-up I just go orange, so I'm going to have to get body paint if I want to do a darker character, so And yeah, honestly, a large reason of why I try to get a bit more fit or toned is for cosplay purposes.

Lol, it's okay! I got so caught up with work that I completely forgot about it!
And yay about SteamCon! This time around I should totally have the money and the time to go!
As for the hand sewing, I guess I'm going to have to look up types of hand stitches. Most of the time, I just do things in a straight line and make it work for me. But that's for plush toys, so if the fabric gets pulled tight, it's not a big deal if it's a little crooked. Bit more tricky with clothing. But I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually! Mostly when I have the time and the energy.
Yeah, I'm pretty pasty, too. ^^ And I have tons of freckles, which I hate. XD But I deal with them. I think the biggest thing I have to contend with is covering up my tattoos. Not that I have a ton of them, but they are.... very obvious in some cases and hard to work around. I've actually managed to lose a little bit of weight since I started working, because I'm on my feet and moving for 8 hours a day. So that's good. But I have to lose a whole lot more before I start the cosplay. ^^

We're supposed to have a cosplay troup this year, but i have a feeling it isn't going to come together in time. I'm having a hell of a time designing mine. : P
I'd show you my sewing tricks, if I had any way of doing so... Hrm, I wonder if I can't draw then out??
Yeah, my one tattoo is on my back, between my shoulderblades at the base of my neck. So far my costumes have covered it up petty well. But yeah, I know what you mean. I fell off my exercise routine, and now I need to get back on it if I'm to fit into my Cammy in time for February! D:

Yeah, my best friend and I have all sorts of ideas for cosplay as well as my own wants, but it's hard to make it all come together. Especially this year. Lots of stuff going on and not a whole lot of money to work with.
Maybe at SteamCon, I can have some scrap fabric and thread and you can show me then? I find I do better with a more hands on approach, but I do alright with pictographs, too. ^^
Yeah, I have two on my back, one on each shoulder, one small one on my right ankle that I'm looking into making bigger because I'm a nut, and one big one on my left left calf. So, lots of opaque materials and tattoo cover up stuff. XD Ah, the joys of having body art that you want to show people and then having to hide it because it ruins the lines of your costume. Money well spent! ^^
