I found your very beautiful Vergil jacket on here right before I began working on my own because I needed a better reference rather than just the game. I'm about halfway done with it now but if you wouldn't mind telling me how you did the long pattern? Did you just cut all the oval pieces out individually or is most of it one piece?

Which part of the coat are you referring to? The Dragon pattern, or the body of the coat? Let me know, and I'll see what I can do to help you out~

I used velvet ribbon - an acrylic based one
I then painstakingly cut out the floating pieces and burned the edges with a lighter so they would melt and not fray. I stitched all those on my hand (as everything on this coat is), and then the long pieces I interwove on the coat, setting them with pins first, and then stitched them all down on the edges of the ribbon by hand.
I hope that helps. Let me know if that didn't make sense or if you have any further Qs.

How much would you want for it

This one was a commission for a specific commissioner, so it is not available. It's worth about $1000, though.

gold&red brocade, blue textured satin-taffeta blend, cotton cording, brass buttons, velvet ribbon, and a lot of hand sewing.

Yes, I'm not sure if there are any photos of what I've made out of silk on my DA... wait! there are some of my bright red duponi silk dress! Though, on geoectomy.deviantart.com are some of my florentine dress during the Ophelia shoot. I love working with silk. It's an absolute dream - bloody expensive though. To date, I've worked with five different kinds of silk.

it takes a while, since i do it all by hand, but i find sewing really physically relaxing and mentally stimulating. I recommend it to anyone with an artistic streak.

well besides drawing i like to make jewellery like rings, necklaces, bracelets n' stuff,.. so when i'm already doing creative stuff besides drawing, why not add sewing to my 'creative-list' too!? x)
... do you find sewing as an expensive hobby?

tarorae In reply to KamTheMightyOne [2008-11-03 04:28:32 +0000 UTC]
oh gawd yes... *cries* I mean, when i first started, I was too paranoid with cutting fabrics to spend much money on my cloth. I used to by sheets and tablecloths and stuff to make things that were really simple (aka drawstrings on everything XD)
Now I have probably over 4000$ worth of unused fabric in my fabric trunk. The most expensive fabric i've ever bought was a hand-beaded Jordanian lace at $300 a metre. *weeps* But I put it to good use on my Carnivale dress. My advice is find a place that offers a membership, it saves you a loooot in the long run.

That is beautifully stupendous! I don't know who's coat it is either, but I'd wear that in a heartbeat. Possibly every day. Is it reversible or is that just a lovely lining?

it's not reversible, it's just really niiiice lining that has a good weight to it so it swings properly when one walks or moves. ^^

That's so pretty! Screw it being a cosplay-- I'd wear it daily! I currently need to track down a manniquen size either AAA or AA, but I haven't had the slightest bit of luck.... haven't sewn in ages because of my search.

I juuuust recently got a mannequin (adjustable) and it's been a lfie saver. A couple of pieces I couldn't have completed without it.

Yea, I've seen them in stores like Fabricland (haven't checked Gala or anywhere else lol) but they don't adjust as small as I am. It's rather annoying (just like the fact that my N key is broken lol), but that's off topic. I'm just desperate to find an uberly tiny one that's not for kids cuz those don't entirely work for me either (but I haven't found any for kids either).

You might have to resort to the old fashioned method of crafting a mannequin that's your size. Traditionally they'd be of wood, but these days you can do a plaster cast mould and then fill it with all manner of materials.

oh joy. please dont tell me for the plaster-cast that i'd have to wrap myself in the cast bandages, because if so I need to learn woodworking since I'm allergic to the bandages T T"

This is absolutely gorgeous! I bet it took a while to finish it? It's very well-made, and I especially like the fabric. I don't know whose coat it's supposed to be, but either way, it looks professional...whatever the "cosplay-whores" would say. ; )

tarorae In reply to Rhoey [2008-02-16 04:04:15 +0000 UTC]
It took some 66 hours to do it by hand, and I took the time to sew the lining into each panel of the coat first, and then stitch the panels together so that even if a seam rips, one can simply reattach the panels without having to worry about the fabric itself fraying.
