Description This listing is on my Etsy here: [link]
Which includes both this One-of-a-Kind real Box Elder wood wand, and its custom-fitted holster.

In preparation for the final installment of the beloved Harry Potter series, I have been making One-of-a-Kind wands suited to denizens of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Each wand is made from real wood, carved and sanded by hand, then modified by sculpy additions which are in turn carved and painted. Each wand has a 'Magic Core' worked into it to simulate the actual Wand Cores required by the wands in the Harry Potter universe. As an additional magical enhancement, I have included a real crystal with real-world magical properties to increase the potency of the wand. Finally, each wand is sealed with an acrylic sealant to protect it from wear and damage. These premade OoaK wands are also accompanied by a custom-fitted holster which can be worn on most belts for easy draw and use.

The 'Badger' Wand -- for any member of Hufflepuff House -- features:
•15" length, sturdy
•Box Elder wood, free-fall for a contented wand, "rumored that the most powerful wand in existence was made of elder, it is not a particularly common wandwood, if only because when elder wands backfire, they often kills the wandmaker or wielder."
•Fairie Wing Magical Core, (simulated from cedar bark shavings) set into the Badger paw-pad on the hilt.
•Citrine Accent, Citrine is one of only two known stones that is capable of self-cleansing itself of energetical build-up - making this a perfect addition for hard-working Hufflepuffs who may forget to take utmost care of their wand.
•Simple construction for utilitarian use - such as in herbology and practical magics. A slender handle is perfect for smaller hands, or those with a tentative touch on their wands.
•Black and Canary Yellow House colours, featuring a Badger paw pad for the House Mascot.
•Matching Holster in Black and Canary Yellow in a simple satin and satin weave for easy wear and use.

If you'd like a custom Wand made just for you, please let me know!

I think I saw your other ones. They're all really good, although the Slytherin one isn't really my style; I'm a Hufflepuff. My wand is fir, 10 3/4", hard, with a phoenix feather core. I'm still not sure what all of that means. )

That just tells you the wandwood, length, rigidity, and what its Magic Core is. :3

Wow! Glad to see another house wand (The badger paw-pad is brilliant.) Out of curiosity, how long does it take to make a wand like this?

tarorae In reply to DontLiveLifeWaiting [2011-05-08 22:07:16 +0000 UTC]

This one in particular probably too me... I would guess 3 hours? perhaps a bit more, since there were a few touch up things that were required.

It has been a bit hard to time myself since I've been leap-frogging while waiting for coats of paint to dry, and working on multiple wands at a time.

I really like all the Houses - I think most of them got a bum rap in the books, since the focus was so obviously pro-Gryffindor. Each house has its own strengths, and I think Hufflepuff is probably the most underestimated. Their House virtues are all qualities that I really admire, and if I weren't Ravenclaw, I would very much have been a Hufflepuff.

For this wand, I thought of the sort of practical, simplistic, no-nonsense Hufflepuff who would want something forgiving and functional that they could use without worrying about it exploding or needing a gentle hand. :3

Oh, wow. I've got the patience and ability to make a wand myself... But I've not got the supplies, and I don't feel as though I've got the skill, either. Anyhow, it's nice to see some as nice as this one. You've really found a wonderful way to interpret meaning into the design - I wish I had somebody like you to Role Play with ('Tis my secret, nerdy obsession. I love to Role Play ^^')

I can honestly agree with you; Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin do not have much of a 'spotlight' in the book. I wish the author had thought to give some detail about each one, or at least a bit more of an overview. And Hufflepuff is definitely the most underestimated of the four! Me being a Hufflepuff myself, I become somewhat unhappy when I ask someone about what House they feel they fit, and they tell me something like 'Anything but Hufflepuff is fine with me!' It really has been deemed a house for 'weak, soft, cowardly' people.

I do also feel Slytherin has been made out to be the 'bad-guy' of the series. Everybody I've talked to has decided that the house is full of evil, cold, heartless jerks :C I've got a friend who is a hands-down Slytherin, but she's friendly enough.

Oh, I fully agree! I think that I could easily see Dark Wizards coming from any house - Ravenclaw would produce the Sociopaths, Hufflepuff the petty criminals, Gryffindor the Meglomaniacs. I have a few Syltherin qualities myself - namely the ambition and the resourcefulness - but I'm for sure out because I don't have pure blood, so I'm disinclined to agree with their strict rigors on that subject!

And yes, hufflepuff was made out to be the 'dumping' house for people not -enough- of anything else to be in the other houses, rather than putting focus on how multi-trade they are, how hard working and loyal - although they got a bit of a nod when Cedric Diggory was chosen for the Goblet of Fire. :3

As for RP - I'm a huuuge RP nut. My friend and I have a blog where we post our RP logs, if you want to check it out: [link]
And if you want to RP with me - just add me to your msn!

I'm really glad to see that my nerdy attention to detail in the layers of meaning in these wands is being appreciated. I was wondering if others out there (fans or no) would have a clue what I was referencing for half this stuff! 'Magic Core'? 'Erumpent Hide'?? hahaha

And I've posted up the other two that I had in progress, and sent you a link for them. :3

Very true. Any single house could create a Dark Wizard, as you said

It really was. It was noted in the first book (I'm re-reading the series at the moment) that it seemed any child who did not scream 'Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Gryffindor' was dumped into the Hufflepuff House. I've created Rebecca, my Harry Potter persona, in an effort to prove to the world that a Hufflepuff is not someone to be frowned upon!

As for Role Playing with you... Well, that would be awesome! I've not had a good Harry Potter partner. I have a Yahoo... Do you? We could Role Play through that.

And I saw the other wands! They're wonderful, as I expected! I really do love your attention to detail :3

My Potter persona is Juniper Windgrace, a Ravenclaw. The Pegasus Wand (the first wand I posted, was actually Juniper's wand!)
Hilariously, I've never RPd in the Harry Potter world! Do you have a set time period or setting? Or is it a loose Hogwarts setting? I don't have Yahoo, sadly, but we could always play through Notes here. Where should we start? Are we in a set year, or is there a current storyline I'd be coming into? Set me a little bit of a scene, and I should be good to jump in!

And thank you very much for having a look at the other wands. Do any of them give you any ideas for what you'd like for Rebecca?

DontLiveLifeWaiting In reply to tarorae [2011-05-09 00:56:42 +0000 UTC]

Juniper Windgrace Oh, how I love the Harry Potter naming style!

As for a time period, I would have to say... A year after the seventh book? Voldemort has died, and the world, muggle or otherwise, has had a chance to settle down. The new danger will be a surprise >D
I like the idea of starting at the very beggining - They are in Diagon Alley, shopping for supplies. Is Juniper Windgrace a first year? A second year? We could certainly Role Play through DeviantART; Would it be alright if I had us both fill out a Character Form, so that I we can better understand the others persona? I don't know much of Juniper as of now... You probably don't know much of Rebecca.

Hmm... I think, out of every wand you've made, Juniper's is my absolute favorite. It's stunning! I like it's design, and flow; Could Rebecca's wand be straight and thin, like her's?

tarorae In reply to DontLiveLifeWaiting [2011-05-09 01:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Yah, the naming always pleased me too! especially seeing where the names are sourced from. :3 Juniper's father was a Wizard, and her mother a Muggle. I like the sound of the timeline setting. As for which Year, I would assume that Juniper's at least second-year since she already knows a good deal about the subjects they'll be studying. I'm not particular about that though - it could be she's just well-read, since she does adore her books. And as for character sheet - if you have one, send it on through to me along with Rebecca's, and I'll fill it out for Juniper and send it back. I've never gotten to actually -play- Juniper, so far she's just been my excuse to dress up to go to the movies! *sewing her hat currently!*

And as for straight and thin, it can be, for sure. I don't have any wood right now that's poker straight. I can go source some birch, willow and a few alternatives and see what I can find that's poker straight. It's often hard to find a piece that has no bend to it that's the right length. I'll let you know what I find. And when you get the chance, if you could fill out your preferences to those other wand-questions I sent you so I can work on design sketches? Thanks very much~

Ahaha, yeah. Rebecca's mother was a witch, and her father was a Wizard, but they both gave her up to her muggle uncle when she was three... Despite how cliche and overused that is -_-
Her uncle is a fun, friendly and childish thirty-year-old man, who's often seen with a lopsided grin on his face, and some sort of candy in his mouth. He does not know of Magic but would except it with a grin and a joke.

I'll rummage around through my computer for Rebecca's sheet; Then I'll send it to you, alright?

As for the wand; Sorry it took me so long >_> I had to make myself think everything through before I answered, because I tend to rush a bit when I'm excited.

...

I also had to eat dinner xD

tarorae In reply to DontLiveLifeWaiting [2011-05-09 01:52:46 +0000 UTC]

Juniper was raised back and forth between both the Muggle World and the Wizarding world, in a sort of joint custody scenario. When she was 10 they gave her the option of which world she'd like to "grow up" in and she chose the Wizarding world, but she still goes to visit her mother on holidays.
Her mother was enamoured with the idea of magic as a young woman, and that was how she fell in with Juniper's father - but she didn't believe it was -real- in the sense that it was until shortly after Juniper was born. She's a librarian in the Muggle world, so Juniper was encouraged to her reading from a young age.
Her father is a doddery, soft-headed, strange man - the sort that would have fit in in the 60s well. He's a tad scattered, rather eccentric, and makes magical artifacts for a career. He encouraged Juniper's artistic streak.

I look forward to getting Rebecca's sheet!

Dinner sounds like a good idea! I've been sucking on tea and juice for the last few hours instead of food. And no worries for taking a while, I forgot how many different threads we had going, and wondered if I'd perhaps sent the questions to the wrong person! XD

I had barbecued Chicken, marinaded Salmon, Corn on the cob, and homemade bread for dinner tonight :3 It was wonderful.

What kind of tea have you sucked on? I like Mint and Lemon Grass, both of which we have growing outside my house at the moment... Which reminds me; I need to pick and dry some soon xD I ran out of my last batch.

Of course, I've got to wait for it to stop raining.

~It may take a bit for me to find the sheet. My computer crashed not to long ago, and I lost everything. I'm searching diligently but I fear I've lost that as well. I'll probably end up re-writing it *Sigh.*

I made a gluten-free chocolate and caramel ice cream cake for mother's day, so I've been wretched and not eaten anything healthy yet!

Ah, tea, my one true libation love! I had in turns: hibiscus, ginger-white-peony-marigold, saskatoon berry-quince juice blend.

Sadly my wild-grown tea was only mint, and it died. I'm back to my dried blends and such. I have a cabinet devoted just to tea!

Ah, tragic when that happens. a number of years back I lost about 4 years worth of work on my fantasy world, and there are still some things I haven't gotten around to rewriting. I will await your sheet whenever you get the chance~

Oh, yum! I was too lazy for cake >_>

Those all sound delicious! We've got a cabinet devoted to tea as well - Both homegrown and store bought. Sorry your mint died! Have you ever tried Lemon Grass (AKA Lemon Balm)?

Agree'd. I was rifling through your gallery and I noticed it sounded as though you were writing a book... Are you? I've always wanted to write one, but I haven't had the time, nor inspiration... And my Laptop is constantly giving me grief. I'm rather afraid that if I start something up, it'll die in another crash.

Anyhow, it would be awesome to hear some writing advice, if you've got any.

I adore lemongrass. I have one that I'm addicted to right now that goes by the name "Monk's Elixir" that contains lime, lemongrass, green tea and citrus. So wonderful for cleansing the palate and soothing the tum.

Aw, thanks for going through my gallery! <3 And yes, I am indeed writing a book... *coughorfifteencough* The current book that I've been pimping and posting about is First Born, a very small (250 pages-ish, by my standards, that's practically a Novella) fantasy novel set in my fantasy world. It's a world I've been working on for over 10 years, and is the setting (in various times and locations) for all of my novels. First Born is due out this fall. I'm in the final stages of editing and illustrating it now. It's very exciting!

Time is something I never seem to have enough of, what with working full time at a Health Food store, and then trying to squeeze in as much of the creative stuff into every spare moment I have - working on a Web Comic (Angel*Down), the novels, the art, the painting, the etsy shop, the crafting, the cosplay, the sewing... Inspiration has never been an issue for me! But I had a few old stories that I had started writing and that I grew fed up with because I didn't have the interest to follow through on, so I definitely believe you need -that- if nothing else before starting a novel. Otherwise, you end up writing a lot of stuff that needs to be culled, or you get bored with it and none of it will ever see the light of day.

As for crashing - send it to friends so you at least have a back up file to work from in case your machine -does- crash. As for writing advice... Ah, I never have writer's block... But I'll often write something, and it's sort of like when you draw a comic panel, and it shows everything you need shown but it just doesn't pop... So you resketch it to improve the composition, and suddenly it's more dynamic? I often do that in my editing phases, where my initial draft will have had all the information that I needed, but it could be presented in a better way, so I'll rewrite the scene from a different character's perspective, or take a cinematic approach, etc.

I think the most important aspect is to just write. To get the feel of the characters, to know them very well, and know their story very well so that the actual writing comes naturally. I find RP has been a huge help for that. Hells, RP is the 'tool' that taught me how to write dialogue. I also find that keeping notes as you go is often really helpful, because for me, when I write, I'll write things I don't even know about, and then, they'll somehow all magically come together as the story progresses, and I'll realize -why- some seemingly obscure detail at the beginning was important to leave in.

I don't know if any of this was helpful, but I'm certainly willing to -try- to be helpful!

If you'd like to know about my fantasy world, I have my personal "online notebook" on my website: [link]
Ul-Zaorith is still being filled out, but it's getting there!

Mmm. I think I'm going to go and make a cup of tea right now~ Monk's Elixir sounds absolutely delicious!

That sounds interesting. I have several ideas for books, and I love them all, but I know for a fact that with my life schedule and squirrel-like attention span, I'll whither before I can work on them all at once. I've got to pick one and stick with it.

Pish-posh! All of what you just wrote was very helpful. I suffer from horrid art and writers block, and I struggle with starting a book or Role Play as well. Do you perhaps know any tips that might help me get over my irrational inability to begin a story? Any tricks of the trade? And that comic-panel idea is fantastic. I'm great at laying something of the sort down - Something sketchy. Using that particular idea should help me keep a good storyline.

Fascinating world by the way. I read through a great deal of it and you've got a LOT of information down; By golly, you've written it with such depth I find myself wondering if you live there! I need to keep a 'journal' like that... Eurgh. I have to overcome my will to be lazy, first.

I think I'm going to go have some monk's elixir right now, since all this talk has left me craving it!

I spent the majority of today filling out my Muzino lexicon, (since the races on Ul-Zaorith have their own languages, the story of First Born takes place in Muzin (primarily), so I get to deal with translation notes and such. Good fun!) I'm really glad to hear you checked it out. A lot of the time I feel like it's really just a storage space that I can access from anywhere. There's so much more I know that I haven't written down, it's kind of absurd. One of these days (in my dreams) there will be a team of little Ul-Zaorith fans filling out the wiki for it from my site, but for now, it sits in obscurity with the rest of my ideas. XD

Beginning the story is always the hardest! This is the part that I find thinking of the book like a film is really helpful. Think of where you can come into it that will capture the reader's attention and set them on the path of the plot. Narration, smack-dab in the middle of an action sequence, waking from a dream sequence... It really depends on the content of the story, the point of view it will be written in, what kind of flavour you want to give it. After I finished writing my first manuscript (Legend of the Quill) I had a dream about watching it being made into a film and sitting in the preview screening in the theatre, and the opening sequence was so much better than how I'd written it to start. So I wrote in a Prelude to include what I'd dreamed.

For First Born, it was a much small book, much faster paced, and it was to start at the very beginning in fire and blood and pain - the birthing ceremony of the main character, to illustrate the origin of his curse and set the path he'd end up walking.

For Ralon the Blind (which I haven't started the official writing of yet) It's likely going to start with a conversation with the reader in second person: a wise old version of Ralon, looking back and explaining how he lost his sight, and unfolding his life story.

But the most important thing, is whatever you choose, it has to have just enough explanation so you don't lose the reader and just enough curious tidbits to make them wonder, to make them want to know more so they'll turn the page. :3
