Description When most people think of the term "angel" what tends to come to mind is perhaps some human-like being with bird wings and a halo. But these winged people are actually the creations of medieval and Renaissance artists. In the earlier Hebrew myths angels (who were probably originally based on beings from even earlier Persian myths) often looked way stranger than that.

Top left: Cherubim. I wasn't quite sure how to portray this type of angel but I have settled on the tetramorph description of a a being that had the faces of a human, a lion, an eagle and a bull (the bull face is not visible in my drawing but is supposed to be behind the other faces, looking back), and had four feathery wings. Angel wings were often said to be covered in eyes, so I have done this for both the cherubim and for the next angel in the pic...

Top right: Seraphim. The highest class of angels, the seraphim looked like fiery serpent dragons with six feathered wings and were beings of incredible power.

Bottom right: Ophanim. Also known as "thrones" these were arguable the weirdest looking angel type, looking essentially like flying wheels wreathed in flames and with eyes all round the rim. Generally used as heavenly mounts.

Very interesting series of drawings (my favorites are the Yokai and dragons).

I also read somewhere that angels were gigantic in size (on foot it would take years to get from their feet to their head), and that looking at them, when they are in their true form, would cause blindness and insanity, just like Lovecraft’s alien gods. Speaking of Lovecraft, what is your opinion on cosmic horror/lovecraftian horror and it concepts (like eldritch abominations/alien gods and so on). Likes and dislikes?

Thanks. ^^

Yes, angels were occasionally portrayed as incredibly gigantic beings. And indeed, it was often said looking upon their true form could be pretty dangerous, at least in some types of angel, particularly the seraphim. Apparently seraphim would cover themselves up with their wings when speaking to humans so as to avoid having the human(s) in question getting burned up by their divine splendour (or something like that).

Despite my interest in monsters and weird things, I've for some reason never really taken all that much of an interest in Lovecraft's stuff.

Oh, ok. While Lovecraft’s original work is not all that what it is hyped up to be, it still has some interesting ideas (travels to other universes via alien geometry, and "gods" which really aren’t gods but just aliens form other realities, that fallow different laws of physics, therefore appearing to be supernatural; the last one is my favorite).
