Cairo has been delayed a bit but his official registration is being sorted out soon. Thanks so much to the group to helping me get it sorted. And so far there are no Red Panda familiars but.....screw it this was for fun and I just wanted to draw one. I love them so much its not funny. Maybe Lakewood are fostering a rehabilitation case for....some reason. I've been in a serious mood for writing almost all year, along with laptop issues and having to get a new one which left me without access to dA or my tablet for a while.

Anyway. I really miss all of you guys and Lakewood and everyone there. I'm planning on writing for NaNo again this year so still on the writing wagon but have been bursting to draw again for a bit now so I'm hoping to get a few bits done and out before the end of the year. Sorry its been so quiet and thank you to everyone who's been understanding about it. (I am on discord a lot, which is where I fell into a Maze Runner fan community and met some great friends, so you're welcome to tag me or dm me there too if you want to catch up. Im in the Nordy and Faime servers as well).

I actually drew this over around 4 hours today streaming the process live over rabb.it, if anyone is familiar with it. I can make a point to drop links if anyone is interested if I do others.

Cairo nestled down into the mossy grasses that were characteristic of the far corner field of the Cumbrian Farm. He pulled up his forelegs, pressing unshod hooves into the pillowy earth and inhaling honeysuckle tainted with rainfall. The autumn weather was shifting down the country, pulling brittle winds and skeleton leaves in its wake, the summer-gold sun turning hazy and muted with each passing day. The colours in the trees were catching fire, burning up in hues of red and gold and flaking off under rolling skies. Still, the middle of the day kept the drag of autumn at bay, leaving a handful of hours when the sun arced highest that it was still warm, the air sweet with cut hay.

Cairo, with his coat still unclipped, had escaped being bundled into a canvas turnout rug so far. He was content to tuck his muzzle down to the grass, flexing his spine into the dip in the ground. He flicked his tail idly, contemplating snoozing right where a gap in the dense hedging that surrounded the Wickerwood field let the filtered rays of sunlight spill across the meadow.

And that was when the woven fence rustled.

Cairo's head jolted up, ears swivelling to lock ahead on the movement where the fence line was swallowed by the overgrown hedgerow. He snorted, nostrils quivering as they flared out and his head tipped up, pulling in scents from the dewy air. Rain, still, even though it hadn't fallen again since the day before; the smell of it was still heady and rich in the open pores of the soil. Honeysuckle; fragrant and sweet, curling in the breeze from the creepers growing into the gate. Mosses and grass; earthy and lush, undercut with sharp, clean notes.

And something foreign to the isolated little Farm. Another rustle and then-

A small, clumsy little creature that tumbled into the moss through the tiny gap in the hedge. It smelled like wilderness and berries on the inside, richness of tree bark and pierce of summer storms clinging to the dense russet fur. Its little amber eyes were intelligent and bright, ears pointed and thickly white to match the precise patterns of its face. And then it set towards him, picking its way through the grass with a little, confident scurry, easy on its feet and counterbalanced by the thick banded tail.

Cairo arched up his neck, inhaling deeper as the little Red Panda drew closer, slowing with caution. It stretched, nose twitching quietly in the sinking sunlight, autumn leaves reflected in its eyes. And then a padded paw came to rest on Cairo's folded leg, bracing its tiny, barely noticeable weight there.

And it no longer smelled like a stranger. If a friend could have a smell, it would be this; almonds and wildflowers, laced with autumn trees and tree sap.
