Description Tesla got a makeover! But I guess only I see all the differences... But trust me, there are LOTS.

So... *clears throat*

As a musical instrument, the 4/92 Seesharp Organ is renowned for its unique "alive" sound, and its versatility, both of which are impossible to achieve on other organs simply because they are not sentient. Not many have played this magnificent neo-baroque style instrument, but those who has says - with mixed feelings - that it was truly a different experience.

The organ was installed in the St Helios Cathedral in the city of Gandvik a little over ten years ago (although the organ itself is older than that), and has gone through numerous restorations since then because of damages caused by its much too reckless lifestyle.

As an individual, however, Tesla Seesharp is probably most known of as the author of the bestselling Journey to the Center of the Universe book series. Tesla has been suffering from writer's block during the last two years, and the final part in the Journey series has yet to be written.

Two years ago, Tesla was engaged to an organess called Saskia Neverwinter, and the two was intending to marry. Their plans were destroyed dramaticly the night before their wedding day when Saskia, along with the church she lived in, was struck by a lightning bolt. She died shortly after this from the injuries she suffered. After this tragic event, Tesla could not deal with his sorrow and chose to drown it in wine instead, and he today still refuses to remove his engagement ring.

Tesla used to be quite friendly, but these days he prefers to isolate himself at his cathedral, yelling madly at anyone who dares to enter. The church has been forced to close the cathedral since Tesla started to mess up everything that took place there, especially weddings, and could not be reasoned with simply because he was always in some state of intoxication.

Tesla is - apart from a famous sci-fi author - also a talented painter and composer. He plays both by himself and a number of other instruments with unmatched skill and before Saskia's death, he often invited people to free concerts simply because pipe organs like to play for people. (Those concerts were rather popular. Hearing a sentient pipe organ play, people say, is a fantastic experience, not only because of the unique sound but also because the musician - the organ itself - does not have the limitations of a human and can play compositions that if they were to be played by humans would have required at least seven hands and four feet.)

Lately however, Tesla has been completely abandoning his art, to the benefit of the local brewery...

About this picture: Ah, finally. I always felt that Tesla needed a makeover Despite the similarity to the previous picture , this one is actually re-done from sketch. New lineart and everything. ^^ I wanted to take the wine bottle out of his hand for this drawing, but now when there were no bottles in the picture it seemed a bit... not Tesla So after the rest of the picture was done, I added a barrel of mulled wine in the corner. Oh, and if you make a comment, please add a $ somewhere in the comment to show that you actually read all this

$ This is an awesomely unique character design! It's nice to see really creative fantasy characters, especially ones with such interesting personalities and stories behind them. The way you incorporated all the organ parts into a humanoid face is really impressive, and the simplistic shading works really well -- this way, it doesn't distract from the excellent lineart and color scheme.

I really like how many elements you have in this picture. Makes it very lively and dynamic. I think some of the organ pipes look weird to me, but I'm guessing that that's an effect that you were going for conciously.

Very nice composition.

Poor guy. A lot of these characters have a dark part of their past, don't they? And I am most curious about why his fiance was murdered (I mean...'struck by lightning'...*cough* ) And HOLY STRIPED PAJAMAS that is a lot of detail! 0.o Very nice! I like the bird scultptures the best. Oh, and I have one question: can he move from that spot at all (also read: does he have legs?), and if not, how did he and Saskia meet? (Not critisism, I am honestly curious! ^^)
...Okay, technically that was two...or maybe three...questions, but I'm sure you don't mind.

Great job!

i like to make my characters have a dark past like that it makes them interesting, or at least i think so...

and yes, Saskia *was* struck by lightning. what caused the thunderstorm and the lightning's attraction to Saskia is another story.

yes, he can move, although he usually avoids having to do that (organs are not built to be moveable, after all ). lol, i realise that he needs to be able to move in order to have met saskia!

thank you so much for the comment!

*grins* You should meet another friend of mine; we've had numerous conversations on how she so thoroughly enjoys torturing her characters. You two would probably get along great.

Okey-dokey! I figured as much, of course; I didn't think you would have a plothole that big and obvious, lol!

You're welcome!

Riverfox237 In reply to teblad [2008-11-01 16:05:54 +0000 UTC]

XD

I usually only go to a certain point w/ traumatic pasts for my characters. Such as, the person is an orphan who's parents were abducted in a raid, but they were too small to remember them, so it's not as terrible! Not very traumatic, but I can't stand putting the guilt of a death or a dead husband/wife/fiance on them. I feel too sorry for them!

I think in this one, the line-art is more striking. Like in the first one there's blurry bits for the perspective (which works too) but in this one there's more to look *at*.

teblad In reply to GuardienOfThePyre [2008-07-29 01:32:32 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome, Hon. Yep, the church walls are not yellow anymore and the mouldings and fixtures are different. And somehow, Tesla looks older and much more tired. I think the sauce is rusting his blower.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

teblad In reply to slowdog294 [2008-07-28 02:30:56 +0000 UTC]

actually i made this new picture mainly because i wanted to try improving my technique, most of all the lineart. i failed, but it is still a little better than my usual lineart.... and another big difference from the old drawing is the colouring method i used. i have discovered the magic of clipping layers

i did make a few slight alterations of his appearance, such as the stop tables, which are now more detailed. and if you look carefully you'll notice that this drawing is zoomed-out quite a bit compared to the old one

but - you looked at the person in the picture, rather than the techniques i used to draw it, and that makes me happy! conveying stories and messages is what art is about, after all, not necessarily mastering techniques (although it helps...).

...he looks older? i did not see that and yeah, you are probably right about the blower, i am pretty certain that alcohol cannot have any good effects on pipe organs

thank you again! and sorry for this super-long reply, i felt talkative...

I would give my eye teeth to have one tenth of your talent. I like both versions. This one is much more vivid. It has more emotion in it. Poor Tesla looks so tired and sad. I can reach where his heart is. Too bad it drove him to drink. I love your art. You are one of dA's finest, Hon. Keep up the great work.

Questions: A living organ? That is amazingly unique! Where did you come up with the idea? And another: When did you start taking an interest in pipe organs?

I fell in love with their music when I was 14 something It was something about the sound coupled with how impressive they looked.

And since I've always enjoyed giving personalities to interesting mechanical things, it was only natural that I would create a living pipe organ ^^ Tesla is not the first organ to appear in my stories
