How can you say you didn't do a good job with the hair? I think it looks absolutely fantastic, the shading really looks like glossy and shimmering hair!

Thanks you so much for the sweet comment. I think I have a tendency to compare myself to other more talented artists. I just desperately want to improve.

Thanks so much for the nice comment. Her name is Lauren Bacall.
She is a famous actress from the 1950's.
I really like your Night at the Opera picture by the way.
It is beautiful.

Hmm... I can't remember exactly which pencils I used.
But they are Faber-Castell graphite pencils. I think I mainly used
H for the sketching and then 2B, 4B, and 8B. I'm still learning how to use all these pencils, and I'm still looking for better techniques.

While I love the photo and it is drawn really well I don't like how over-edited it is. The black is just too harsh and it looks over-worked and sounds more digital and traditional. I think it needs to be worked on more before it is scanned in.

I wish I could say that everything you mentioned was done on purpose, but it wasn't. I agree with you on the harshness, and I think that came from my scanner. I had to pull the gamma down quite a bit to catch any shading. I think I will probably start scanning at Kinkos, because I am losing some of the quality in my pictures. I really do appreciate any critiques or help from anyone. Would you mind telling me what you I needed to work on before scanning?

I meant trying to build up the shading more on the original - in preparation of what the scanner might do so make sure your shading is as dark as you can get it and as smooth as you can get it. And it is okay to see some evidence that it has been drawn come through on the scan.

I'm really glad you like it. I never really noticed how much contrast there was until people started pointing it out. But I guess it works. I love your owl key ring. You should sell them. They are adorable.
Anyway, thanks again.

Nice minimal style - bringing out just the heaviest shadows/details to reflect the form. It really stands out from the overload of realistically drawn/shaded portraits on DA - of course it shows great technical (copying!) ability, but no real personal interpretation of the photo it is drawn from.
Style rules!

Oh sorry - it was nothing negative about what you did - I meant your work DID have style - which made it stand out from the usual portraits I see on DA. Hope that clears it up!

Well, the scanner I used had an option to play with the gamma.
The brightness and contrast options made the whole picture either
gray or white. The gamma actually darkened the dark shading and
whitened the white parts. Honestly, the actual picture doesn't look
like a photo, because you can see the pencil a lot more.
But with this particular scanner, it washed out most of my shading.
So this was really the best representation of my drawing I could get.
I really appreciate the nice comments, and I'm glad you like it.
I'm still waiting to see another Harlow from YOU! Get working on it!
