Description Back in 2014, I had submitted a sketch of an earlier iteration of this armor.  I titled it "Things to Come" with the expectation that I'd be posting a fully developed version shortly after.  It took quite a bit longer than expected, but it looks like I can finally deliver on the promise implicit in that title.

After going rogue from Karic's KAIROS Project, Reina has devoted considerable effort to crafting a set of equipment to her personal specifications.  Her armor emphasizes speed and mobility, offering unrestricted movement at the cost of its damage-soaking potential.

-The bodysuit is directly adapted from the KAIROS armor she possessed when she went rogue.  It was too valuable to abandon, as it is tailored specifically to integrate with her nervous system.  Like most military-grade bodysuits, it is semi-powered, or power-assisted.  This function is not intended to increase the wearer's strength so much as to negate the weight of the armor itself, allowing for easy movement.  Reina's armor is so light-weight, however, that the semi-powered function overcompensates for the weight and gives a slight boost to her already super-human agility.

-The "helmet" is not so much a true helmet, but rather is a soft head-covering with armored attachments.  The body of the covering is constructed from largely the same flexible materials as the bodysuit.  The faceplate contains a suite of optical sensors which offer a field of view easily matching that of natural eyesight, with a greater degree of clarity in the peripheral range.  The "fins" on the sides of the faceplate contain sophisticated auditory sensors, giving Reina access to acute omni-directional hearing.  Like the bodysuit, these functions are linked directly to Reina's nervous system while the armor is active.

-The rib-padding incorporates built-in friction sleeves, capable of holding spare magazines for most small arms.

-The shoulder blade plates on the upper back can be magnetized, allowing weapons and equipment to be stowed in an easy-to-reach manner.

-Several hard-points on the back and hips are left open to allow for additional equipment to be mounted to the armor.

-The boxy black module on the inward-facing side of each forearm contains a retractable link cable, allowing Reina to physically link with digital systems through the armor.

-The thigh plating incorporates roomy cargo pouches for stowing miscellaneous gear.  The bulky modules on the fronts of the thighs contain supplementary battery  packs to extend the armor's operational life, as well as canisters of medical agents that the armor can access to mitigate injuries.

EDIT Dec. 20, 2016:  I'm reclassifying this from the 2016 version to the 2015 version.  While this design was posted in 2016, the vast majority of work on it was done in 2015.  I'll be posting a more up-to-date illustration in the next couple of days, which will be classified as the 2016 version.

Criticalish things that don't really matter to anyone but take into account realism and the idea behind your character:

Guts and intestines exposed-  Literally the easiest thing to protect is left completely exposed with a full hand of completely protectable space left over.

There are two pockets and ribbed stuff for magazines-  I love when people ask:  "How many pockets do you need?!"  The answer is almost always MUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRR!

High pads-  Knee pads are high enough that when bent it should just present the underside to the ground.  Making them fairly useless unless you can adjust them.

Leg weight is now heavier than the rest of the body-  Here's an experiment you can try:

Step 1:  Setup-  Put on a pair of cargo pants/battledress pants post 1910, stuff some canned food into all the pockets you can, and you can tie it down if you want to.
Step 2:  Test simple movement-  Try walking forward and then pick your leg like you're stepping over something and record your response for later.
Step 3:  Test wide movement-  Trying running forward and then taking a quick right turn, then pivot behind you as if you heard something alarming, and then record your response for later.
Step 4:  Test complex movement-  Try laying down in a prone position, stand up quickly as if to run away, then take a knee like you're being attacked, and then return to a prone position.
Step 5:  Analyse how you felt about each movement test.

Realistically the best type of armor would just be what's needed to protect the vital organs and because of her need for speed, quick response, etc.  So basically just plastic/polymer knee and elbow pads, and a slip on plate carrier with everything she need open and visible for her to use.  IRL plate carriers that can stop a 7.62x51mm/.308 (most NATO sniper, battle, and regular hunting rifles use this caliber) armor piercing and similar only weigh 6kg.  Normal plate carriers that can stop regular .223/5.56 Armor Piercing, 7.62x39mm AP, 5.45x39mm AP, and most regular full power rifles as long as they aren't using heavy AP ammo, basically only weighs 5.2kg.  Considering Thigh guards only exist on assualt kits, helmets are only useful against artillery/airstrikes/mortars, and fingerless gloves are only useful if you hate yourself she's carrying a lot of extra weight.

But this is all without considering her true role and purpose.  Which we don't know beyond it involves: pistols, knives, and moving in close quarters/space ships.  Which is where lightweight armor is at it's worst placement and isn't as useful.  Close combat, urban combat, and ship to ship infantry combatives are all the same things.  They require speed of deployment, unsustainable firepower, firepower sustained, momentum in combat, etc.  A pistol doesn't match the firepower of a rifle, a knife doesn't have the ability to blow up a building, faster movement doesn't allow for good momentum against suppressing fire, etc.

Making the only purpose of her armor and equipment is a non-combat role or restricted one: like a medic, supply, combat cook, driver, noncombat engineer, or on-base security.  We don't know how the rest of the world looks to judge wehter she would work as a covert ops person.  But seeing as most covert ops look like:

Delta Force and CIA.  The guy in white is Delta, the vest guy is CIA

I don't think full black and armor will fit.

Hey! I'm actually on a project, it's completely an independent project, kind of a tv series but for Youtube... but the reason of my comment is, are you interested of helping me by the atworks? i mean, probably i can't give you a GREATEST payment, but for me, i guess it's possible... just answer me or send me messages.
P.D. Wonderful work! :3

I have always been interested in "How the @?*& should you put this type of suits on?"
I mean there is nothing too complicated about the armor pieces, but how about jumpsuit?
Is it stretches in the throat area? Because I can't see any type of fastener on the suit.
And how "helmet" and throat part connects with the rest of it? Is there an adhesive of some sort or a smart material?

P.S. Sorry for my english. Please don't be lazy and point my mistakes. I want to know it better.

I'm not sure about this, but there seems to be a seam on the back that might be accommodated for getting the suit on. If that's not it, well it's just a guess...

The general design remains the same. So much of the bulk was removed from the forearms and lower legs though. It does makes more sense: Reina's swift and nimble but even with cybernetic limbs that much armor would definitely slow her down some.
I dug up her previous armor design: tekka-croe.deviantart.com/art/…
Will we get to see her mech armor again?

Tekka-Croe In reply to 509freak [2016-02-11 20:51:49 +0000 UTC]

It's rather gratifying to look back at that design, and be able to see that many of its most essential parts and motifs have managed to survive three years of constant fiddling and redesigning.

If by mech armor, you mean the old Orchid battlesuit, then probably not.  The concept of a special class of hardsuit built for the KAIROS is still there, but it's more likely that Reina will end up fighting it, instead of piloting it.

(edit: clarified ambiguous terminology)

Definitely alot sleeker and less bulky than her previous armor, but I can't help but miss the "water-wings" and shin guards.
They seemed to define her armored silhouette a little better, although I can understand that she'd have taken them off for weight and maneuverability.

Tekka-Croe In reply to Vennicerunnos [2016-01-31 16:53:42 +0000 UTC]

The shin-guards I removed a while back, for precisely the reason you mentioned- they added a bit more bulk to the design than I wanted, and broke up the curve of the leg.

The removal of the little floatys on the upper arms was a bit of a different story.  I actually worked up a couple versions of them near to completion while working on this, but I never could get them looking satisfactory.  I eventually just moved them off to the side while working on the rest of the design.  As I was looking at it without those little modules, it occurred to me that something about leaving the arms uncovered helped to emphasize her nature as a stealth operator, so I decided to leave them off.

They may reappear at some point as an optional attachment, but I'm pretty happy with how the armor looks without them.

I see what you mean, without the shin guards it really displays her inhuman robo-leg shape.

What did the little arm guards do specifically? just armor? or ammo storage?
I figured they might've been gyroscopic anti-grav units or something because they were so small for just being arm armor.
Something about them is almost definitive though, like Batman's arm spikes or Superman's red underwear.
They're a a tad strange but without them it just looks a little off somehow in the back of your mind.

Tekka-Croe In reply to Vennicerunnos [2016-02-01 14:53:48 +0000 UTC]

The arm guards actually were just armor.  A couple years ago, I removed the large gauntlet plates that I had on her forearms because I felt that they caused her visual center of mass to be too low, and I added the little bicep guards to try to bring  that center up.

You're right that it was a very distinctive part of her silhouette.  If I were to keep that silhouette though, I'll have to go back to the drawing board in regards to what those modules are, how the look, and what their purpose would be.  I really like the shape of the arm without them, but they may end up being too distinctive to fully get rid of.

If she took them off for weight then I can't really figure why she'd put them back on except for just armoring up for a big fight.
and doesn't she have a big "orchid" mech suit for that anyway? or is that no longer part of her character?

The Orchid was never meant to be a regularly-used thing, but at this point it might as well not be 'canon' anymore.

The basic concept of it evolved into the large black hardsuit on the right edge of last year's sketchdump: tekka-croe.deviantart.com/art/…

(Though, that's not part of Reina's arsenal.)

Whaddabout the one up and left of it? just above the semicircle machine pistol thingy and under the big purple... uh... what is that?

lol I know it'd probably be somewhat considerably time consuming but it'd be nice if you'd consider uploading all those individual sketches/drawings separately with descriptions & details underneath.

That one is a smaller hardsuit that's been converted for unmanned operation.  My intent is that two of them can be slaved as support units for the larger suit previously mentioned.

It would definitely be nice to have descriptions for each sketch individually, but it would simply require more time than I can afford to spend.

A simple 'title' to each sketch would provide some explanation, enough for most people I'd think.

"Unmanned Hardsuit" "Operative Armor" etc

That seems like an ideal solution.  I'm not sure I have the time or inclination to do that with last year's sketchdump, but I'll probably plan on it for this year.
