I don't know why, but the whole princess and knight dynamic appeals to me so damn much. Some people will say it's sexist or whatever, and it can be, but there's just something so wonderful about it all...
I've been playing a game called Dragon's Dogma recently, a fantasy RPG. I played a huge, grizzled, bearded warrior called Siegmund Blackmane. He had traipsed across the land for weeks, even months, fighting monsters and helping out the country's military to protect the public. While sometimes he would have help, the fog of war would sweep him up, and he would tear into the enemies of man without heed for himself or anyone. When he'd come to, all those who were by his side would have fallen, and he'd be alone again.
Eventually, his services were realised, and he was summoned to the capitol to be knighted by the duke. The court jester had made a fool of him during the ceremony, and glued a gaudy hat to his scalp. Those around him who had previously such a dour look burst into laughter, malicious, at the expense of the ragged swordsman who had the gall to surpass their skill and reputation.
Siegmund wandered out into the garden, desperately tugging at the hat that had cost him a good chunk of pride. A fit of anger was about to take over, when he was suddenly distracted by a gentle humming from the flower beds. A song of a forgotten age, when adventure was sought for adventure itself, and kings were not born, they earned their place through valour and wisdom. He was drawn to the source, and a petite figure turned to greet him. A lady of regal bearing, despite being no more than 25. Clad in fine silks and the softest furs. A woman with pale, turquoise eyes, which seemed to see straight to the soul. While her lips were small, they had parted into the warmest, most inviting smile imaginable, as she gave a gentle chuckle.
"My my! Apologies dear warrior, but to see a face as austere as the castle walls adorned Β with... this..." and she tapped Siegmund gently upon his head where the fool's joke was still glued. That little contact suddenly sent a flush of heat through the swordsman's face as he realised how much of a sight he looked. A giant in tatty, scavenged armour, greatsword slung across his back, his thick dark hair and locks fluttering in the breeze... topped with a jesters hat.
"Still, 'tis more agreeable than the hopelessly dour air of most of my husband's sworn swords. Valour is found in the heart after all."
Siegmund had stumbled upon a woman of royalty, the Duchess Aelinore, a lady with a true and kind heart that none other could match. A woman who embodied everything that her standing was known for. A blooming wild rose, hidden away in a forest of steel, stone and grim soldiers. Our swordsman had stumbled upon the first person ever to make him feel truly at ease. All this time with the blood of monsters and men on his hands, and now here was someone who made him feel clean again.
The Black-maned swordsman smiled. Maybe he didn't have to be alone anymore.
I don't really know what I typed there. It's late. I just got a bit carried away when I saw the heart in this work. Reminded me of something good.

So I just happened to stumble across these and the other page of sketches at the same time that I'd been introduced to Disney's new theme song, "Time of Your Life," and it was a magical combination. I was totally inspired for a week.

I really would like you to color the one of them embracing in the top right corner....The expression of joy on her face and his look of fear, like he might lose her while she looks likes finally won him - priceless. A stunning sketch that must be colored!! Pwease?

Thank you, sweetie!
Don't be embarrassed - I don't know anybody who hasn't practiced poses or techniques from other artists' work, it's just part of the learning process. I'm very flattered to know that my sketches help you out!

A nice pairing. Love the expressions.
As for why they are hugging. My theory is the knight did something that pleased the princess greatly, like fetched a hard to find thing. He would have gone directly to her, which is why he is kneeling down, tired. In her excitement for the item, the Princess hugged him. Our knight, still tired, returned the hug without even thinking.
Yup, that's my theory.

YAY! They're back! I love these characters so much, I feel such a connection to their work, since it reminds me of all my ditsy little romantic fantasies. I wish I could draw the same character more than once, especially if they are as cute as these. I especially love the embrace image in this one. It's so well done and you can really feel the emotion there, like he's afraid to or has lost someone very dear to him and is maybe needing her physical contact to reassure him. You can also see in that one her absolute joy of having him wrapped around her as well as her love/concern for him. I love this couple, and am anxiously waiting more!
Personally, I think even if you told us their names and a little of their story, they will still be just the sweet princess and her shy knight.
Honestly, I can relate the them on a realistic level as well, hehe, my bf is that much taller then me too, and he is also shy/serious and yet outspoken in a reserved way, as I am very exuberant, easily delighted and lead the adventures!!
Keep these 2 coming!

Of course! How could they not! (even with my relative romance) They are a special romantic duo and I can't imagine someone not finding some relation to them.

It's been so long since the others!
Ooh-LOVE these! My favorites are the big one in the middle and the kneeling embrace in the top right. And her dress is awesome. And her expression on "the same" one....We will eventually get a story for them, right? ;D

Ughhn, I just love these characters. ;_;
Probably because I'm a big sucker for romances such as this, but hey, who cares? XD
I love the height difference between the two. There could be so many possibilities with just the difference alone. And I imagine it's fun drawing their height difference?
I also really love how I can somewhat picture their personalities within each sketch. In my mind, they look as though they might have completely different characteristics; the knight, as you said, seems very shy, and I'd imagine he'd be a bit serious and quiet at times, where as the princess looks tooth achingly sweet and exuberant, and judging by the apple sketch (at least I'm assuming they're apples, anyway XD), humorous and observant.
I just love your art, so much.
I wish I could be as great an artist as you.

You're too nice, and I don't deserve it.
It is a lot of fun drawing the height difference, although it's murder keeping it anything like consistent.
I think the princess is very much like you've described. The knight does tend to be a bit reserved, although I think his real personality is a lot more outspoken and relaxed. It shows through from time to time, I reckon, but he's got a lot of filters in place.

Oh, all my characters have stories, more or less. I'm terrific at starts and endings - my trouble is always all that stuff in the middle. But I'd certainly like to do a proper story for them.
In any case, yes, it's alright with me.

SummerGal7 In reply to Tell-Me-Lies [2008-10-05 05:07:08 +0000 UTC]
Ohh, that's great! 8D And heheh, I think everyone has the same problem - the beginnings and endings are so crystal clear as to what you want them to be, but you haven't the foggiest idea of what's going to happen between those two points. XD
And hooray, thanks! : D

These to are still as interesting as ever! And your rough sketches are just so clean *at least to me*
Mm yes I get those moments where I just need a hug...no words are needed in that moment.
oooh keeping there names a secret? Aw poo! I really want to know more about these two!
I really like the one where they are sitting/squatting. Something about that one catches my eye I guess.

I like that one too. I have trouble, sometimes, getting the facial expressions I want, but these two worked on the first go.
These do look deceptively clean, really - if you could see the real sketches, you'd find that they're absolutely tortured with eraser-marks.

artistic-minds In reply to Tell-Me-Lies [2008-10-06 02:43:11 +0000 UTC]
I know what you mean with the facial expressions, some days it works..other days it doesn't. Complete luck of the draw for me....I always blame the pencil for some reason.
oh I bet, my art on paper is absolutely smudge-tastic. And don't get me started with hand inking. It's just trouble waiting to happen.
