Silk's not as difficult as it seems, once you realize the light-reflecting properties it has. You have a base color, with sharp highlights along the tops of all the folds, and a darker color in the depths of the folds, plus the darker areas reflect a bit of the color from the surrounding area. (Or, if you're going for shot silk, which has one color for the warp and another for the weft in the cloth - i.e., the threads on the loom going vertically are one color, and the threads the weaver weaves in going horizontally are the other color - then the light areas are one color and the dark areas are the other, which can give some bizarre effects.)
So I started by coloring it all the base color. Then I swept the dark areas in, making sure to keep the edge along the fold sharp. I put the highlight along the tops of the folds, making sure it was right next to the darkest areas of the depths, since that makes them pop. I blended the parts of the darker stuff that weren't right next to the edge of the fold into the base color, and then swept a bit of blue from the background into the darkest areas of the fold depths.
I did look at several of the photos of c-dramas I'd downloaded in order to figure out where the folds would be and what shape they'd take.

I've just somehow figured out how to do it quickly. I did one painting like this (which I can't post yet, as it's for the Yuletart Secret Santa exchange on LJ), and then did this one to basically prove it wasn't a fluke. XD
And I can't figure out where I'm actually doing much different from what I was before. That's the weird part.
