Description I figured out a realism style that doesn't require me to spend days and days working on the piece. This took me 11.5 hours from sitting down and going "Huh. I'd like to do a painting" to posting this. Woo!

Clothing loosely based on Tang Dynasty China, via all the cdrama screenshots I downloaded to decide on clothing. XD (And yes, the research and downloading is counted in the 11.5 hour total. )

Original sketch in my scraps , done in Photoshop CS, and yeah I know her face is so much better there. Deal. The rest done in Painter IX, with patterns applied to the trim in Photoshop (the Liquify tool is GOD.)

I like how you managed to achieve that silky look.
I'm only now teaching myself how to airbrush with a tablet and can just about manage to get cloth to like cloth, instead of plastic. Silk though, that has to be difficult.
I may have to steal your original sketch and have a go myself!

Silk's not as difficult as it seems, once you realize the light-reflecting properties it has. You have a base color, with sharp highlights along the tops of all the folds, and a darker color in the depths of the folds, plus the darker areas reflect a bit of the color from the surrounding area. (Or, if you're going for shot silk, which has one color for the warp and another for the weft in the cloth - i.e., the threads on the loom going vertically are one color, and the threads the weaver weaves in going horizontally are the other color - then the light areas are one color and the dark areas are the other, which can give some bizarre effects.)

So I started by coloring it all the base color. Then I swept the dark areas in, making sure to keep the edge along the fold sharp. I put the highlight along the tops of the folds, making sure it was right next to the darkest areas of the depths, since that makes them pop. I blended the parts of the darker stuff that weren't right next to the edge of the fold into the base color, and then swept a bit of blue from the background into the darkest areas of the fold depths.

I did look at several of the photos of c-dramas I'd downloaded in order to figure out where the folds would be and what shape they'd take.

I agree that the face was better in the sketch, but I love her hair, and her outfit It looks very authentic, there's such a lot of beautiful intricate detail ^^

I like her design a lot--you've drawn her robes beautifully! I might suggest you add her shadow against the background, to make her look more like she's standing in in front of it.
I like her hair ornaments

It's because what I really need to be drawing is a comic, so my brain insists on giving me ideas for paintings. Once I finish the comic and have time to sit and paint, my brain will insist on giving me comic ideas. That's the way it works.

my brain works exactly the same. example: I need to start writing the story for an upcoming rpg session everytime I start "oooeeee thats a good idea for painting lets do that"

Wow, this looks really great. I think I love the detail on her purple collar, sleeve and belt the best. The highlights also look amazing. So nice!

The light and shade on it isn't that difficult, once you figure it out. The big problem is working out where the fold and draping goes. XD Once you do that, lay down a base color, swish in a dark color for the fold, place a light color for the highlights right next to the dark color, then blend in the edges on the dark that are *not* next to the lightest, and vice versa for the light color. Then to give it that silk look, I lightly swished some blue from the background into the darkest part of the folds, since silk is reflective.

I've just somehow figured out how to do it quickly. I did one painting like this (which I can't post yet, as it's for the Yuletart Secret Santa exchange on LJ), and then did this one to basically prove it wasn't a fluke. XD

And I can't figure out where I'm actually doing much different from what I was before. That's the weird part.
