Description “Of all earthly music, that which reaches farthest into heaven is the beating of a truly loving heart.” ~Henry Ward Beecher

HUGGIE-HUG. Wanted to keep this really quietly colored, sort of like this one: [link]

Ink and PS. Characters are Rian and Farael. Again. Because I can't stop the goo.

I love the overall composition of this piece, although, if you don't mind, I'll try and offer a few tips that might help you in the future.

Firstly, the hair. Hair is probably the one this I could say I am best at (simply because I love big poofy locks). Her hair is wonderful done and has a very natural flow to it, but his does not. In order to remedy this, try thinking of how your hair lays when you tilt your head down in a position very simlar to his. Keep your hair down when you do this. Where does your hair go? Naturally, hair will flow over the shoulders and possibly even slightly over the face in strings rather then tight points. This basically means that the hair in back would most likely lay a bit more flat on the nape of the neck and then hair in front would appear to cascade over his shoulders slightly and possibly cover a bit more of his face.

The only other critic I can give is that, other then very well down anatomy, there is only one bit that seems a little out of place. Its hard to tell, but after looking at the piece for a few minutes, it looks as though her right leg is in a bit of a strange position. Again, I find to remedy this, look to your own body when trying to sit down in the same position. Is it possible? In this case, I would recommend her leg not be on its side, but rather the foot be near where her cafe is now and facing foward toward the viewer. This will make the anatomy a bit more spot on.

I realize this is a finished piece, but hopefully these critics help in the future. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Hey, thanks for the crit! I keep having issues doing his hair... it seems like 70% of the time it comes out looking okay, but the remaining 30% it doesn't. Apparently this is one of those latter times. -_-

About the legs... I wasn't totally sure how to resolve that whole area. I wanted to include her legs, but honestly, I'm not that good at the lower part of legs (especially ankles and feet!). I do think that it's theoretically POSSIBLE, but it doesn't really look comfortable. The legs were kind of driving me crazy and I just wanted to get them done, so that's certainly a fair criticism.

Thanks again!

Haha - I definitely know whatcha mean about the legs, its a problem area for me as well. Hell, I use my own advice and sometimes I still have trouble getting that perfect angle. I find that many times, its all about the angles and you might have the right idea but it just doesn't want to work for you, or even when you do get the anatomy perfect, it just looks weird or too forced. Ugh, the perils drawing.

You have a fairly sound knowledge of anatomy though, definitely better then myself. The hair doesn't look bad either, so try not to look at it that way. It looks fine. I was just making the suggestion mainly because, if you want the hair to look tight as thought it been styled then you are in the right direction, but I assumed from the composition you might prefer a more natural approach where the hair is completely loose of any such products, etc.

Your on the right track in every area though. Keep up the good work, you can only get even better. <3

I sometimes do weird things with hair. Some of my characters have really natural-looking hair (like Rian, for instance) but a couple others have this sort of anime-spiky thing going on (younger Trean has this to a huge degree, which is why Farael inherited it ). Occasionally it looks more pronounced than other times, I guess. Generally I think I just need to be a little more aware of whether that clumped look is pushing the boundaries of unnatural. Good suggestions

Amazing gallery, this has a lovely whimsical Victorian feel to it, like a book illustration.

Aw, thank you! You're actually not the first to tell me it's got a book-illustrationy feel. I can't say that's a bad thing! Thanks so much for the kind words.

I know I said this last time, but I get a "book illustrationy" feeling from this, too. I'm a big fan of mostly flat colours and relative simplicity so I like this; perhaps that's why I got the book vibe.

Thanks! I really like the flat colors too. I'm trying to find a good balance between dimensionality and the emphasis on line that the flat colors give... honestly, I think one of the big strengths of my art is the linework, and it's hard not to lose it when you start doing a lot of shading. Lately I've been really into flat color for that reason. It gives artwork sort of an arts-and-crafts-movement vibe.

You're right - sometimes beautiful lines get lost when you colour. It's often I've liked the lineart of a piece mroe than the coloured product. Finding a way to let lineart shine is a balancing act I guess.

Very pretty! I love the soft earth-toned colors -- one of my favorite palettes for sure. ;D What's the tattoo on her shoulder?

It's a red mockingbird! There's a slightly better view of it on her personal flag in this picture: [link]

One of these days I'm going to post a good picture of it, because I'm actually going to get it done on myself pretty soon and I've been solidifying the design.

Awesome! I don't have the courage for tattoos (I'm afraid of needles, and I worry that I'd regret it later), but that's a very pretty one to get. I've always been a fan of bird tattoos -- usually, the simpler the better (one or two solid colors, no gradients). I hope it turns out the way you want!

Wow! You did a great job of drawing these characters interacting. That's a hard pose to nail, the folding of bodies into each other. Looks pretty good!! Keep up the great work.

Aw, thanks! So glad you like it This one was a little troublesome in the conception, but definitely fun to do the whole way. I'm a real sucker for close cuddles.

Oooh, I missed this in my inbox earlier! *w* They look terrific~ I love the folds/how her gown wraps around her form! So lovely~ And of course, I love that cool expression on his face~ It's a nice contract to her impassioned expression. Another great drawing of these two~ *o*

One of these days I'm going to have to draw something--gasp--different. I can't believe I'm not sick of drawing Rian and Farael yet... I'm glad you're not sick of seeing them, certainly! I was actually pretty pleased with this one. I think I said to someone else that the sketch was giving me a lot of trouble, and I ended up just "settling" for the position her legs are in, but the whole upper half I really do like. I want a Farael shnoogle.

Ah yeah, that's why I have so few full-body drawings. x_x; Situating legs and stuff is SO HARD. I have a full-body drawing in the works of D&S and I just had to get Alan to pose with me and set the camera up to take a timed picture. xD Stuff like that I absolutely have to have a photo ref for. I'm atrocious at imagining the human body (correctly) much less TWO bodies interacting. lol However, I can easily say that you're much better at it than me! lol

Yeah, I hate legs Actually, that's not true, I love looking at them (especially man-legs) but I hate drawing calves, ankles and feet. Which is usually why I just end up cutting stuff off with the edge of the page... (LAY-ZEEEEE. )

On a side note, I LOVE the way you draw hands. Hands and faces are my favorite body bits to draw because they're the most expressive and complex, and so I always appreciate a well-done hand. You're VERY good at them.

CrystalCurtisArt In reply to temiel [2009-10-06 15:41:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! xD I really love hands and faces, too! (Two of the things that drew me to your art, actually! I really love the long fingers you draw on your hands, too, though I bet you knew that. lol) I actually always use my own hands for reference, if no one else is around to be my personal hand model. lol I've actually started just taking pictures of my own hands and uploading them over onto the comp to use for reference. It soooo much easier for me than trying to invent a hand. x_x lol

temiel In reply to CrystalCurtisArt [2009-10-06 15:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah, cool (and thanks! ). It's hard for me to use real hands as reference, because mine are so thoroughly UNreal, and it's REALLY hard to find someone with hand proportions that look like the ones I draw (in fact, I think the only person I'd ever met who had hands even approximating the overall length and thinness of the ones I draw had Marfan's syndrome). Most of the time I feel like I'm totally fudging the hand anatomy; for instance, I almost never foreshorten, even when it would look less awkward to do so. However, it does kind of seem like people like my hands (I've gotten quite a few compliments on them over the years) so I think I should just keep doin' what I'm doin'. As should you.

HAND BUDDIES!

This is so beautiful again I love the colouring style you used here. The pastel colours really help to underline the tender love moment
Their embrace is so cute and how Rian clings to Farael is so lovely. She seems a little sad, but Farael's expression tells the watcher, that he would fight everything that's causing Rian trouble.
It's such a sweet moment and Rian and Farael are such a cute couple
Keep up the great work
