The chevrons don't look evenly spaced.

There are nine on the gate yes, some gates only have eight though, mostly ones in Pegasus.

Very nice, looks awesome, almost like the prop gate from the series. Oh, and FYI-- there ARE nine chevrons on the gate according to GateWorld, and Chevron 27 as well as the Stargate prop model and Wikipedia!

Nice picture!
For records, the upcoming second spin-off "Stargate Universe" will put the ninth chevron at use. About what it does, there is no indication yet.
Otherwise, yes, it is seven symbols for a travel between stars and eight symbols for a travel between galaxies. The chevron on the top of the stargate locks the last symbol, the point of origin.

I want your skills... I really want to be able to do a Stargate, but its too complex for me. You did this very very very well! Keep up the greatness

Goodness me. There seems to be one heck of a jargon related error here...
A chevron is quite simply a symbol. In the marvelous fictional realm of Stargate the lovely little constellation marks on the gates are known as chevrons. For lack of a better name, the illuminating triangle like wossnames are often referred to as Chevron-Locks/Co-Ordinate Locks/Gate Locks.
Therefore, each Stargate in the Milky Way boasts exactly 39 chevrons (of which this piece of art sadly omits 5). The upgraded "Digi-Gates" in the Pegasus galaxy (Stargate: Atlantis) hold only 36 chevrons, but still maintain the 9 'Locks' found on their predecessors.
Each gate ever shown in any film and in TV series featuring a Stargate include 9 'locks'. Possibly due to the fact that few gate users ever use them (let alone know how to), the eighth and ninth 'locks' are often burried at the bottom of the structure in the concrete steps or earth. (In official Stargate canon the eighth co-ordinate is used a handful of times to add an 'area code' like variant to enable the user to cross to different galaxy. Although a nine chevron address has never been actuated in official canon, fans speculate it may be used either to traverse time or simpy act as a 'country code' variable to enable the user to cross to a different universe/dimension.
But lets not detract from the artwork...
Its a fantastically detailed piece with a strong attemt to bear accuracy, (Kudos) but a somewhat disappointing background. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the lesson and yeah the background is just a toss-in. I might resubmit one day without the BG.

It's a REALLY good job.
BTW, on some gates there are nine--on others there are 7.

Pretty cool man... Shows a lot of effort. A Stargate's really hard to do, I tried myself one time, but I failed.

Intially I thought that was the deal as well. But it was pointed out to me that it is not so. I had seen some conversation of 8 being used so I started with that, then went to seven, then changed it again when I was shown this:
"How many chevrons are on the Stargate?
The Stargate contains nine chevrons. Although the gate has nine chevrons, typically only seven of these are used when dialing from a gate. In the episode The Fifth Race, an eighth chevron was activated (thanks to the knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into Colonel O'Neill's brain) and Carter noted, "The extra chevron must add a new distance calculation to the existing points, like a different area code." So far, the eighth chevron has been used only once (on the Earth Stargate), and the purpose or function of the ninth chevron is still unknown"
Here's the relevent site.

there are only seven. let me recall you back to the movie for the workings of the "gate to heaven"
the first six chevrons are to locate a final destination. this is done by locating six points in space (designated by the zeros "0").these points then designate three lines in space. these lines (------) lay on the x, y, and z axis. these lines intersect at a single point (designated by the "X"), witch determines a final destination for the stargate. the seventh and final chevron is used to designate an origin (+).
sorry for the bad news but i thought i might inform you.

What about the episode where Jack had all that info put in his head, and at the end of the episode he went through the Stargate to an Azgaurd (sp?) ship? In that episode it showed an eighth.

7 chevrons to dial gates in the milky way, 8 chevrons for a special destination(or so I was told) and 9 for the Pegasus galaxy.

7 for Milky Way- 8 for another galaxy (i.e. Pegasus/Asguard), and 9 for Destiny (Ancient Ship) I believe.

There are only seven chevrons on the gates because they are only ment to travel in universe but it is able to add another chevron to the address, if you have enough power to give it the ability, to take you to another universe where there would be a gate with the capabilites to dial all adresses.
