Description January 11th, 2009. With months of warning in advance, Human civilization braced itself as a small comet entered the Earth's atmosphere. The comet struck the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the Pacific being depopulated. In the following months, freak storms and hurricanes, each seemingly the largest in recorded history and each seemingly more intense than the last, ravaged the world that was not hit. Famines killed off more than what the comet initially killed. China was depopulated, along with the rest of Asia. With a lack of food, the world's population slowly died off.

Conflict erupted in May 2048, as a number of nations violated one another's territory to secure remaining oil reserves for their own domestic purposes; spiraling out of control into the third world war. The war was fought between several new, major great powers on Earth and a wide assortment of middlemen; the USA, Central America, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Germany, Russia, the European Federation, the Kalmar Union, Switzerland, the Central European Republic, South Africa, China, Korea, India, Iran, Japan and the Federal Commonwealth of Oceania.

Following the major nuclear conflict between Russia, South America, Europe, and North America, the world looked finally like it was on it's way to recovery, as the recently formed UN Science Commission developed stable, prototype thorium reactors, and began liberally proliferating their schematics to various recovering nations. Thorium is widely considered to be the next great leap for Humanity. With large-scale industry inconvenient for a nation's infrastructure in this next generation of science and technology, many countries have adopted regulated market policies and welfare balances to maintain order and lower unemployment.

By the 2070s, the United States, still a major space player, began manned missions to the moon once more as the global economy had recovered enough to allow for convenient space expansion, and in 2076, the first international space station was established on the Lunar surface.

So what prompted the USA to adopt a Parliamentary system?

The US constitution was greatly altered in the late 2030s. Congress was expelled as legislator of the country, and was replaced by the American Parliament. People thought it was fair; voting was now compulsory and universal in the US (with some exceptions of prisoners and mentally ill), and the percentage of votes one party got equaled a percentage of seats in the American Parliament; therefore, the American people would ACTUALLY decide how the country would run.
