Description Terrible tutorial of terribleness. I'm sorry, this probably won't help anybody, but I tried. I just wanted you guys to know my thought process while designing things in my sketches but I'm so all over the place it's hard to explain!

Please don't feel afraid to ask for clarification. It probably needs a lot of it.

Oh, and I didn't screencap my coloring, sorry. The problem is, I blow these files up to 300DPI and this one was about 4000x6000 px so it's very hard on my computer to paint AND screencap things. It makes Vista very sad and my laptop so hot that it burns me

Edit: Honestly, I am truly shocked that this got a DD, but I am very honoured. So thank you :devtransendingwings: for suggesting it and ^FantasyStock for featuring it. Most of all, thank you everyone who actually sat down and read the entire thing since I know it's a lot. Tutorials have helped me become the artist that I am today and it means so much to me to be able to give back in the same way.

What do you think I should rename it to? I was almost debating on putting this into scraps, but some people said they found it helpful despite my thinking that it was useless.

At the same time, I did say why I felt my choices were good ones. Or I at least tried. I apologize if that didn't get through.

Well, it's more a case that a tutorial is supposed to tutor. Showing your process is more entertainment than tutoring.

Hm... it's a walkthrough so something like Tetiel's [insert what your image is] Walkthrough?

*is so not creative*

i absolutely LOVE the detail int he hair
your lineart is awesome

>.< i get so lazy to do all that detail.. @.@ in hair or background XD

Oh thank you! And yeah detail's a hard thing to do. Sometimes it gets so bad that my hand and wrist starts really aching. That happened especially with the gardenias in the background, but the results are often worth it!

Trust me.. you've helped me. lol I rarely think about composition or anything of the sort (I've been in 'special art classes' since Kindergarten but as you can see from my deviations, none of it helped) and I don't think about flipping the drawing to notice mistakes until it's too late. Thank you for this.. seriously. I'll definitely think about the process more the next time I draw.

Tetiel In reply to bunniegrrl [2011-05-19 12:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Good, I'm glad I could <3 Even in this, I kinda flipped the drawing too late. I find it's best to draw the figure naked and flip it then before you draw all of the clothes which are dependent on the figure in the first place. Thankfully there's the handy dandy transform tool if you forget to do it until it's almost too late

Just simply glancing over these, I feel like I've somehow learned something :3 It's definitely a more personal account of how your art comes about, but generally others' personal reveals tend to teach me more than a flat-out tutorial.

Excellent <333

Tetiel In reply to ChachiTonks [2011-05-19 12:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh great! I'm glad you feel that way. I think what's most important is that it never starts off perfect by any means. There's a lot of mistakes made along the way. I used to think that artists just start off with something beautiful that they just randomly think up. Well, maybe some do, but I sure as heck can't xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ChachiTonks In reply to Tetiel [2011-05-19 20:19:37 +0000 UTC]

I start out with blobs and general concepts xD Honestly, if I'd never completed a piece people would fear my art rather than be mildly content with it.

Your start seems good to me >:3 Allows for more flow that way.

Wow, it's amazing to see other artists' ways of drawing. You go from a still slightly messy sketch to a perfectly colored masterpiece! Fantastic work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Tetiel In reply to Birdie121 [2011-05-19 12:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I kinda wished I was able to screencap that since I also went through a lot of color changes. I have since gotten a fan which cools down my laptop enough to actually be able to do it. My sketches are ALWAYS messy. Everything gets cleaned up in the lineart process, though. Thanks

Thank you! I was really, really, really confused when I saw an add to the DD catalogue. Then I saw your comment. I was like wtf, this? Really? Especially since it's just a huge amount of rambling and I was sure it didn't help anyone at all I should really make more tutorials, though.

ali-sharp [2011-02-05 20:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow! This is SO useful - you actually went into detail and showed us how you think! And also, the picture is so beautiful...
One question that doesn't really have much to do with the tutorial...how do you get inspired to draw? Do you just sit down and decide to draw something or wait until something inspires you?
Again, fabulous tutorial, I'll probably keep coming back to it Thanks for posting it!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Tetiel In reply to ali-sharp [2011-02-05 21:08:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well... that's actually a great question. Sometimes I just feel like drawing and have kind of an idea in my head, but I'm not sure what. I tend to look at pictures that freaking amazing anime artists like Onineko or Nardack where they always put a crazy amount of detail into their personal work. And to be perfectly honest, a lot of these types of things take me months to finally complete mostly because they're precious to me, they're mine. I want to do it right. I actually have some in there that are almost a year old that I've put off for now :\

Commissions, while this may seem terrible, typically don't take me that long. I think they'd be pissed at me if I made them wait for months so I just force myself to draw xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ali-sharp In reply to Tetiel [2011-02-13 13:58:41 +0000 UTC]

I see...
I don't spend too much time on my personal work because I'm impatient xD I'd love to be able to spend more time on it, but school is in the way until June!
Its not terrible that you're faster at commissions, in fact, it is great. I suspect that some commissioners order something and then want it done by the next morning...I just wish I could force myself to draw without it looking terrible.
Sorry for the late reply!

Mizashi [2011-01-24 05:00:59 +0000 UTC]

This is an AMAZING tutorial! It's sooo helpful like you wouldn't believe. I'm terrible at composition and designing stuff (especially clothes!) so I really appreciate the tips you give to fellow artists in need like me. Especially the part about the Rule of Threes (never heard of it, probably because I haven't taken an art class before XD)

I have a few questions, though: Do you always do your sketches on the computer with a grayish background? Would you recommend doing sketches on paper or computer? o.o Also, do you draw every part of your sketch designs on a new layer? (like the choker, ruffles, bracelets, etc.) Or just one? >.< Because I really hate sketching a design, then deciding that I don't like it, and erase EVERYTHING surrounding it and redoing it. =/ Thanks again! This tutorial was incredibly helpful!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Tetiel In reply to Mizashi [2011-01-26 02:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Aww why thank you <3 I don't know how old you are, but if you're still in high school, it might be worth taking at least one. Of course, it all depends on how good your art program is. I was very fortunate to have a really great art program in my school which kind of nurtured me as an artist.

Oh, actually I do my sketches on a white background with black. Digital or traditional is totally up to you. I always do mine digital because it's much easier to make changes to proportions or just to erase in general. But yes, I do pretty much everything on a different layer. You can flatten them later if you want to, but it makes everything easier for me when I'm designing outfits.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Mizashi In reply to Tetiel [2011-01-27 22:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks so much for the advice! I have one more question though, how many layers do you typically use in a drawing for your sketches? >.<

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Tetiel In reply to Mizashi [2011-01-28 00:20:42 +0000 UTC]

Completely depends on the sketch! Usually at least 10 or so since I start off very rough since I have a shaky hand

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Mizashi In reply to Tetiel [2011-01-29 01:10:17 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I see. Me too, I have a shaky hand as well XD And then once you're sure that you'll keep a part of a sketch, would you merge it with the rest of the sketch? o.o

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Tetiel In reply to Mizashi [2011-02-01 11:35:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, no, probably not until I was done with the entire sketch. After that, I have no need for the layers in the sketch so I merge them to spare my poor computer's RAM.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Mizashi In reply to Tetiel [2011-02-05 02:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I would definitely need to spare my limited RAM too. XD Thank you very much, your advice was INCREDIBLY helpful! <33
