Description I finished this one a looong while back...but I kinda forgot about it...

Like the other Felid drawings, this was done with solely ballpoint pens - no pencil, no marker, no paint. There was a little bit of adjusting the contrast and brightness in Photoshop.

From Wikipedia: "The tiger (Panthera tigris), a member of the Felidae family, is the largest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. Reaching up to 3.3 metres (11 ft) in total length, weighing up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds), and having canines up to 4 inches long, the larger tiger subspecies are comparable in size to the biggest extinct felids. Tigers have a lifespan of 10–15 years in the wild, but can live longer than 20 years in captivity. They are highly adaptable and range from the Siberian taiga to open grasslands and tropical mangrove swamps. They are territorial and generally solitary animals, often requiring large contiguous areas of habitat that support their prey demands."

Now, most of us hear all the hype around tigers being endangered, such and such species have gone extinct and you should donate $50 to this obscure organization to give to tigers. I know, I know. I'm not saying it isn't true - tigers are definitely endangered, but I'm not going to give some sob story like "DON'T BUY FUR, YOU HEATHENS." In fact, if I were to tell you any 'positive' message, it would be to pay more attention to other, more significant species.

Tigers and other 'cute' species, like Pandas, have long been the poster childs in the endangered species movement, despite there being species in much worse shape. Great White Sharks, for example, were recently found to have less total numbers than tigers. Amphibian numbers are on the decline due to a fungus which has an almost 100% kill rate on each individual amphibian it comes in contact with. Alligator snapping turtles are rated as #6 on the WWF's "Top 10 Most Endangered Species List" (although, pandas and tigers are 2 and 3 on the list, respectively, so I take that with a grain of salt).

Here's an interesting look at 10 endangered species with actual numbers: [link] I would take a guess and probably say there's at the very least one animal on this list that you've never heard of, yet they are more endangered than intelligent humans in Jersey.

Sorry for writing such a long comment, but I hope y'all enjoyed it (if you did read it).

All right, I probably shouldn't be saying anything because I couldn't possibly make anything like this with only a ballpoint pen. But here's a few things I observed:

First, the positive:
-the fur is absolutely amazing. Though it lacks a bit of the "fuzzy" quality that's easy to do in pencil, it still looks real and is incredibly detailed. The fur on the chin is particularly well done.
- the white whiskers against the black fur is also very difficult and well done
- the general stance and emotion come accross wonderfully

The negative:
- the ears appear a little small, but as I don't know this paticular tiger personally, it might be natural after all
- the whole of the face seems to progressively twist more towards the observer as you go down. For example: the stripes are perfectly centered between the ears, but are no longer so between the eyes. The eyes are in three-quarter view, but the nose twists progressively until the muzzle is almost in frontal view. Be careful of that next time (it's the most difficult part of an animal face and I've made that mistake myself)
- I do like the eyes, but there's a little something missing. Ballpoint pen is tricky, but a very light sheen on the iris would help bring some depth into them, I think. (This is nitpicking of the highest order and feel free to disregard it).

Hope this helps, and keep that ballpoint rolling!

Thanks for your critique, I appreciate it quite a bit.

I don't want to nitpick, as it comes across as abrasive sometimes, but the issue with the nose twisting from a 3/4 view to a frontal view has actually been brought up before. Now that I look at it, I can understand why it looks like that. However, I realized that's a product of my adjusting the contrast which made the shading of the fur on the left side of the nose look like it was actually part of the nose. It's hard to put into words I guess, but I planned on taking another picture to hopefully clarify that.

Once again, thanks for such a great critique.

Thanks! Nice to know it looks real.

Yeah. I guess it's probably too much to ask for better poster childs in the Endangered Species movement...

This is amazing!!
I love the detail in the face and fur. The nose looks a bit off at this angle though, looks more like you are seeing it straight on, rather than at an angle like the rest of the picture. Thats the only thing I can really see. You did an amazing job on this piece!
Puts my tiger to shame lmao

Thanks for your comment and the fav.
Yeah, I see what you're talking about with the nose. The original drawing looks better, but adjusting the contrast kinda made it look weird. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll see if I can fix it.
