Oh my god, I. CANNOT. DRAW. CUTE. GIRLS. WTF, self, seriously! I can draw men of all ages, subtley sexy women and sort-of pretty girls, but not cute girls. Nope.
... Well, I'm trying, give me points there at least -_-;
I also sort of suck at making characters look mostly emotionless. I try so hard to make my characters expressive most of the time, I can't seem to do the opposite without something sneaking in...

Now, for the record, this comic has a sort of 'third person but only with one character's perspective' narration, like how in Harry Potter, the story is technically third person, but you really usually only get to see Harry's thoughts and stuff. I have no idea if that made any sense, but it's basically to help explain how some things are shown...

Asylum doesn't like confrontation. He's extremely self-defensive, but he usually won't start a battle if he can avoid it. He'd really rather run away.

Hmmmm...looks like another promising comic. Though I'll have to see if it lives up to the DP Asylum....which, it kind of is already....ugh, how do you draw like this???? LUCKY!!!!!! Well, more like SKILL!!!!

Oh my god, I. CANNOT. DRAW. CUTE. GIRLS.

Nah, you did well. You want cute, you work the eyes; small nose, receding chin-line, smooth skin, etc. And that's what you did here, and melded it damn well with the "creepy," so, win.

I have the opposite problem, I can't draw anything without making it look a-DOW-a-ble. Seriously, I've tried, I can't do it. bah.

You think so? Thank you!

Try to taper the chin a little bit more. Cute girls usually have a small frame, right? A slender...er chin would probably narrow the face a bit to fit the frame.

She looks cute-ish, but a little creepy, too. Especially with her hair and the half-robotic face and the way she speaks.

I'm really liking your art style these days... Maybe it's the lighting? I've always liked the use of light and shadow, and this kinda plays that part up, being mostly black-and-white.

The-Alchemists-Muse In reply to CallMeShaudo [2008-11-18 02:38:18 +0000 UTC]

That might work... I usually connect 'rounder face' with small and cute, but then again, I'm not exactly the expert on cute, as this comic shows

Well, that's ok then. As long as she's a little cute but still remains creepy...

Thanks! I really like dramatic shadow (or light) use myself, which is part of why I've been using this... I think Greyscale is more eerily emotive than tinted lighting sometimes, since the tint can make the mood seem a little... Forced, or something. Greyscale basically does the whole 'simplicity for more effect' thing... And stuff.

Color's hard to work with, from what I've seen. I've seen way to many pieces where the color is overdone or not done properly, and it really throws everything out of whack. You say your style is simple, but it works. If you want, I'll tell you when I see anything that can be improved without compromising your style.

Well, I'm glad the cute/creepy stuff works out. Cute is different depending on the style, so you may have to draw more cute things and get opinions and critiques on them if you want to be really good at it and still blend them in with everything else. And it's most certainly not a requirement, especially considering the kind of stuff you like to draw. At least, I don't think it's a requirement... Do you like drawing cute stuff?

The-Alchemists-Muse In reply to CallMeShaudo [2008-12-02 01:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that'd be great!

Do I like drawing cute stuff?... Well... Not particularly. At least, not kittens and bunnies cute. I DO like cute that's kinda 'unconventional', especially if it has a creepy or eerie twist on it... But the general idea of 'cute' isn't something I'm fond of drawing too much. Which is probably why I don't have tons of practice. Plus, like you said, it usually doesn't come up in the types of things I draw.

Although... I really should know how to some extent, just so I'll be able to should the need or urge arrive...

I dunno, maybe... I think me and 'cute' just don't mix well. Or I should practice, maybe *has no cute and/or younger girls in her upcoming comic, so has no characters to practice with* I like drawing adults better, their proportions make more sense >_>;

i drew 3 nel's recently, i have also drawn a couple of pictures with yachiru, the shape of the head and eyes are a big part, and for kids just be sure to make the head a little bigger than it would on an adult, and give them a little puppy fat

I think the robot is kinda cute. In a subtly disturbing, warped-human-form kind of way.

The-Alchemists-Muse In reply to thunderstorm101 [2008-11-05 21:59:53 +0000 UTC]

Really? Thanks. I'm not sure I could draw anything cute that didn't have a subtly disturbing warped element to it, at least not without it being so obviously sugary sweet that it'd seem sarcastic -_-;

Nope! You won't get answers out of me that easily, hehehe.

It does? Thank you, I'm glad to hear so. I was a little worried it'd look TOO dark, but I do like using it, time extensive as it is...

I wish I had that problem in this case It mentioned on Libinai's ref. sheet that she doesn't show surprise or anything, but... Nngh, I can't help it! The closest I can draw to 'emotionless' is 'bored'...

I guess there something for everyone there. And besides, I've barely worked with making expressions, so I've lots to learn.

Haha! Yea, I hear ya. It's somewhat the same with me when it comes to writing. My mind is practically an open book when it comes to making up stories, whether it's romance comedy, adventure, or even horror. It's getting the right words down on paper thats the hard part.

I believe the name of the POV you're using is Limited Omniscient Point of View (just a fun little fact).

Anyways, excellent work. The lighting is excellent! Oh, and Libinai X does look fairly expressionless to me

Excellent. Don't ask why that pleases me, it just kinda does.

And tsk! Keeping this from your adoring fans for so long! Bad Muse, bad.
-cough-
-also guilty-

The robot vision is extremely cool, however. Or maybe I just have a thing for white lines one darker background.

The-Alchemists-Muse In reply to Trilies [2008-11-02 23:09:35 +0000 UTC]

There is something fun about that, isn't there? Perhaps it has something to do with how the type of being Sy is isn't considered to exist... Not like 'dragons and unicorns and ghosts oh my' don't exist, but... It's something that's just NOT considered real... Hm, I should stop talking now >>

;_: I'm sorry! School was Evil and Filled with Essays of Doom and tried to devour my soul, so I just dropped dead whenever I went home... Also, I am lazy. That's my main excuse, yup.

Thanks! Heh, NoIDidn'tJustUseTheRobotVisionSoICouldUseTheInverseColorsOptionReally. No seriously, it was totally vital to the story. Totally.

That should be helpful... In a way...

(besides, there's already at least two people who know the whole story already- I know them both in RL- and I don't want to tell TOO many people... And five bucks says he doesn't know either. XD

And, um, I love you long time? XD [/convincing attempt]

Speaking of monsters, I've been reading the Crucible and have been sorely tempted to make monsters based off of the events in its. Especially a gallows monster.

Hehe, I'm still considering... It might be nice to have another person to bounce ideas off of, just talking about this stuff does let me figure things out better, even without input... Let me think about it...

Oh? I haven't read the Crucible, so I don't really know what you're talking about, but it sounds interesting...

It's historical fiction, so there's no actual monsters. I was just thinking-inspiring about creatures I could make based off the events in the book.

Although, speaking of things with monsters in it... Dead Space has evil tentacle baby corpses.

I figured as much, but I brought it up because small children/baby oriented monsters are some of the creepiest for some reason. -shrug- Heck, now I don't even know why I brought it up. XD I blame all the Disney songs I'm for some reason listening to.
