Description Rather than just update older images, I thought I'd break with tradition and submit a new one.

So this is the work done so far (I haven't forgotten about the AOW piece, I'm heavily re-sculpting the weapon and digging through tons of pre-columbian art and designs to make something with a good Inca/Aztec feel, and there's a link below for those who want to see him as he currently stands).

Ok so two links, but never mind.

Anywho...

This is a more in depth break down of the processes involved and how I go about it (I call it "making things up as I go along")

So as you can see once the armature is solid, I then chipped back the apoxy sculpt with a scalpel blade 15. I then had to tweak areas, such as the extended knee as it was collapsing across the body. I then start with the feet and work up, being careful as I go.

Once the torso is finished I then stick the head on there and sculpt in the neck muscles and thicken out the back muscles and rotator cuffs (will include a shot from behind in the next update).

I then add some detail to the front of the loin cloth and let it dry.

Finally I begin to move on to the arms, again starting from the shoulder and working down. As you have probably noticed his left arm appears to have a very long length of 0.2 brass wire attached to it. This will be used to attach the blow pip, I will be wrapping the 0.2 wire around the end of it to create a solid base support then sculpt the hand and fingers grasping it. Trying to sculpt the hand first then attach it to the arm will only result in one thing....

Frustration and nobody wants that...

After these areas have been done I can then move on to the next stage which will be adding additional details such as jewelry and bracelets, belts, poison jars etc... you get the idea.

EDIT: Finally completed, had loads of fiddly areas such as the weave on the bottles of poison and of course the hands kept me busy, sometimes I had to sculpt two fingers completely before I could move on to the next two.

The 0.2 gauge wire was wrapped around the blow pipe, with fingers and clothe strips sculpted over the top to cover it.

The weave on the bottles was sculpted by adding thin rolled out lengths of green stuff going in one direction then when it dried adding a second layer going in the other direction.

Tried not to go too detail heavy though as it means paint work doesn't get a chance to shine through.

Well that turned out long than I had hoped but I hope you all find it useful or at least insightful.

Total height from cork upwards: 32mm, figure height without the base would probably be about 25mm or one inch.

If you want any more info just ask.

can i buy these or are they just for you

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to Durlok [2012-08-02 16:16:07 +0000 UTC]

I cannot legally cast this one, it's based very heavily off artwork owned by gamesworkshop.

and we all know how they are haha. i am well willing to pay for some models tho. and i guessing i am not the first. but this model would be yhe first on my list. is there anyway that i could buy it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to Durlok [2012-08-02 17:26:51 +0000 UTC]

There's no way you could legally buy a copy, Gamesworkshop are very good at stopping that sort of thing from going on and I don't want to be threatened with a law suit.

Durlok In reply to The-Build [2012-08-02 18:25:20 +0000 UTC]

do you do these for GW, because altho you have stated it is the special character. it is not based on any model in their range other than name right now, legally you can sell it unless that is now part of their model rage which it isnt since you made it, unless you are giniving it to them, which is ok too

The-Build In reply to Durlok [2012-08-02 19:05:46 +0000 UTC]

I've never worked for Gamesworkshop.

Actually, the 5th edition artwork for lizardmen had this character almost exactly as I've sculpted him, there is no way I could get away with it even if I was tempted to try.

Well it turned out a damn fine sculpt in the end. Holding back from going too detailed was a good choice; the detail hotspots provide nice areas of interest, and also allow your skill at musculature to shine unobstructed in other areas.

I need to paint a cast version of this for the golden demon in the UK in septemeber so I held back a little to get some smooth brush stroke work in.

I have sketched it out and can't wait to put it altogether.

dreamfloatingby [2012-05-08 19:21:38 +0000 UTC]

inspirational as always. I read what Randy wrote about the pose-thats so true. Getting the pose in the armature is like posing a skeleton in place.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to dreamfloatingby [2012-05-08 21:10:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm starting to think more carefully about the posing work now and placing more care in it.

I'll upload more photos like the one above, especially when I get round to sculpting this new Banshee/wyche.

GinkgoWerkstatt [2012-05-08 18:26:56 +0000 UTC]

Looks good. Do you plan on giving this guy some color as well?

And do you add the head just with green stuff or do you use the wire for it?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2012-05-08 18:31:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I fully indeed to paint this when finished, wondering at the moment whether or not to make a resin cast first and paint that.

I make armatures for all body parts including the head.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

GinkgoWerkstatt In reply to The-Build [2012-05-08 19:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Is a resin cast something to cover this sculpt or to make a copy? That question might be dumb, but i have no idea.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to GinkgoWerkstatt [2012-05-08 21:01:46 +0000 UTC]

It's done to make a copy which I can then paint.

Gopalik [2012-05-08 17:14:07 +0000 UTC]

Amazing! What do you sculp with? What tools?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to Gopalik [2012-05-08 18:01:24 +0000 UTC]

I use green stuff and the tools are a combination of clay shapers and scalpels.

I think this may be one of my favorite pieces of yours so far Rich.
From the pose to the details and expression.
Excellent work my friend!
Take care

The-Build In reply to RandyHand [2012-05-08 16:50:32 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Randy, actually went through this one quite quickly that it surprised me, but I definitely had fun doing it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RandyHand In reply to The-Build [2012-05-08 17:11:07 +0000 UTC]

It looks more flowing and natural.
Sometimes it's not about the amount of time on a piece but the quality of the time that you put in to it.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

The-Build In reply to RandyHand [2012-05-08 18:22:12 +0000 UTC]

I think it might be because I've tried to focus on armatures more (if I'm correct then it should become more obvious in the next piece).

Even though armatures have no detail, it's still possible for them to look both dynamic and impressive.
