Description This is the first in a series of shots I took while out on a camping trip this past weekend in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas. This is Convict Lake, just a few miles South of Mammoth on US 395.

Landscapes aren't really my thing, so any pointers would be appreciated.

here's the pointer ... point and click... it's hard to go wrong.... but seriously, always try and get some foreground that's gives a sense of perspective to the final shot. Shooting straight out over the edge of a cliff for instance does not always get the effect of awesome vastness and huge size that you feel when you are there.... there are exceptions.

Well thank you. I seem to work with the point and click philosophy a lot when it comes to landscapes... I think it's just that thing you do until you really start getting comfortable with composing them.

Pretty damn good for a landscape if it's not your thing. Is this a single exposure or an HDR rendering?

Thanks. It's a single exposure, but I merged two different versions of it together to get better detail in the clouds. I suppose you could say it's like a cheaty HDR.
