Even if it's been a while, it's nice to see you back in the saddle with your paintings. Nice job on the snowballs that Sweetie Belle is holding, the blur effect looks great on it. Applebloom looks like she's bringing the pain, a la a wrestler.
Merry Christmas! (It is still in the 12 days of Christmas! So it completely counts!)

I think you're one of the best MLP fan artists out there, your quality is great. If you could manage a few more posts, I'd love to see them.

Thanks very much!
It all starts with a good foundation. If your composition is weak or your values and edges aren't reading properly, all the flashy colors and fancy brushwork in the world won't save your picture.

Thank you very much, The-Wizard-of-Art
It is funny that you point out this very crucial point right now because these days I am planning on some comic pages and am very much reminded to the need of a good composition by one complex panel. A good arrangement of main visual focus character and the visually less prominent (but integral for the punchline of the page) characters is a challenge indeed. There is a lot left to learn for me.
The arrangement in your image is really well done and I am trying to point out some of the means which create the effect.
The crusaders are forming a triangle with the character closest to the viewer (Scootaloo) set between the two other corners (Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom) who come at different elevations (if that's the correct term) and with the triangle they are forming being not symetric. I guess if Applebloom and Sweetie Belle were both on the same side of Scootaloo the entire focus of the image would shift to Scootaloo and her running away with the other two appearing somewhat detached from her (also it would probably create the false impression of Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom teaming up against Scootaloo when Apple Bloom is actually about to ambush Sweetie. I think it would also make a huge (and negative) difference if Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom were at the same hight or at the same distance from Scootaloo (again this would probably draw too much attention to Scootaloo only and make the other crusaders "background ponies" so to speak).
I'm memorizing how these aspects contribute to how well your composition works.
Thank you very much for this inspiration
It is a great pleasure to learn from somebody who has mastered the composition so well.
May I ask if you did experimental sketches to figure out the composition or did you have exactly this composition in mind from the very beginning?

Firstly, I apologize for taking so long to respond. I didn't mean to blow you off for a whole month, but it seems my powers of procrastination are a worthy rival for my drawing skills.
With that aside I must say your assessment of this picture was very insightful, and I'm pleased that you consider my work worthy of such thorough study.
I do start my process with thumbnail sketches and try to explore as many different ideas and arrangements as I can, and it's funny that you mention it, but one of them did have Apple Bloom between Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. For the very reasons you described, it didn't work, and there wasn't enough distance between Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle for the giant snowball to feel threatening. Elevating Apple Bloom and moving her to the other side of Scootaloo helped to balance the picture out and, as you pointed out, put the fillies in a triangle configuration which made for a much better visual flow.
I wish you the best of luck with your comic project (if you haven't finished it by now). You seem to have a pretty good understanding of composition and how it works, so I'm sure if you keep studying good examples of it and apply what you learn it should turn out great!

Knowing Scootaloo, she will just dodge some of the snowballs and then fire right back. Really cute, captures the playful nature of the cmc really well.

Maybe. It could just as easily end up with Sweetie buried under a massive snowball.
