I've been developing my Godlings characters bit by bit, and most recently I've been sketching busts of them to work out their primary features and colors. I'll be posting them here, proof that I really do make art! ...just not finished art very often. These character busts were meant to give me a reason to design the various minor characters that appear in Godlings, but also as an exercise to practice making distinctly different faces, something that I know a lot of comic artists struggle with, especially when it comes to pretty women. These do not take into account full costumes that they might be wearing; they're just the base character, for my reference.

Most of the busts I've done so far are women, therefore. I will eventually be getting to all the male faces as well. And of course the Egyptians with their animal heads are a whole other issue.

And now, Anubis, the last of the character busts I've finished so far. He's another popular one, one that again it's been a struggle not to show looking exactly like everyone else's version of him. I tried to make him stand out with his more interesting markings, inspired by Egyptian wolves. (Fun fact: what we've all been calling "jackals" never really existed as a species. It is believed now that the canines Anubis was modeled after were in fact Egyptian wolves, a subspecies that's smaller and more dingo-ish, but still a wolf.) But again, I must remind myself that the gods who appear in Godlings are NOT in fact the main characters, and are really only there to get the ball rolling. So while yes, I would love to have my version of everything be more unique and awesome than any that have come before, don't we all? It's a losing battle, and at some point, I am learning to just make do. To make something that pleases me and MOVE ON.

I'm just a very slow learner, that's all. *hangs head*

As I said before, I'm showing an AWFUL lot of gods and goddesses in the opening chapters of Godlings, and it's nothing but good practice and good prep work to sketch out how I'm going to show them all. If you've got a favorite amongst the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Norse, the Celtic, the Hindu, or the Aztec pantheons, let me know! I might have them down as appearing in Godlings, and I'll take requests as to which bust sketches (like these) to make next!
