Description 2014. Astrid Hofferson from How to Train Your Dragon 2.  I love this costume! I have sections I want to redo, but overall, I'm happy with how close it looks to the film version.  I'm new to cosplay/costuming, so any tips/advice/critiques are welcomed!

I don't think anything needs redone, but in the movie is looks like her leather skirt plate is attached to the fur skirt. So maybe you could do that if you wanted to? Also, how did you do the fur skirt for this? I was thinking of ordering a faux fur fabric and attaching it with a zipper piece, but I've never used a zipper or Velcro in my life. ;-;

Sorry for the delay in responding --I was out of internet range last week.

Thank you! Yes, I noticed that too from the clips --I decided to leave the leather layer free like her skirt is in the first movie, because it would be impossible to sit down! Even then, the tips of my spikes and skulls still broke off (I used Crayola model magic), so I have to redo them at least.  I'm glad you can't really tell in the photos though! If you use a more durable material for the spikes and such,maybe you could sew it down ...

There are a lot of websites with advice on sewing with faux fur, so I recommend looking at a couple.  I used a simple skirt pattern, moved the opening to the side, but I did not use a zipper.  In fact, I'd highly recommend NOT using a zipper or Velcro. Even though an invisible zipper might work if the pile (hair of the fur) is short, I think the teeth of the zipper might still get stuck in the fur. Velcro might get stuck in the fur also. Instead, I used hook and eye fasteners which are hidden by the fur. There are larger fur hook fasteners, but the small hook and eyes work fine.  I used about three pairs and then since I bound the waistband with the brown faux leather (so the fur skirt and the "leather panels" are attached), I used a small piece of Velcro between where the waistband overlaps to fasten it.  I put the opening on the right side, since I thought it'd be easier to hide the seam because her belt pouch is on that side. You can hardly see it, so I'm very happy with the result.  Hope that helps!

It's alright! I don't mind, I almost forgot I asked at first but I'm very happy to see a response! ^-^

I'm using Crayola Model Magic as well, since it's cheap online and at stores. I thought of using hot glue and sewing them to the leather panels/plates of her skirt. One friend of mine said it worked somewhat, except for the back because she accidentally sat down on the panels and spikes. xD But thanks for the tip, I probably wouldn't sewn the plates to the fur even after my friends 'accident' with hers. I'm going to know wonder how Astrid is comfy sitting on the spikes.

I see. I'll look into the hooks, hopefully I can get some. Thanks for the response again! This helps out a lot. Ever since I started gathering materials I was always wondering how to do the skirt and whatnot so this helps me out so much! ^_^ And, by the way, wonderful Astrid too! Best I've seen yet on here, too! ^_^ Hope you take more pictures soon.

For the spikes, I used a superglue called e6000, which worked fine. I don't know if hot glue would have the same staying power. For the skulls, I superglued Velcro to the backs and to the waistband to attach it (as suggested by another Astrid cosplayer).

LOL, I know right? Even if Astrid doesn't have to worry about anything breaking off like we do (I'm guessing hers are metal), that cannot be comfortable ... : P

You should be able to find them in any store sewing department, they should be pretty inexpensive too. They look like this, just in case. Really small. www.onlinefabricstore.net/drit…
Glad I could help! I hope you post photos when you're finished.  And thank you! There are a lot of amazing costumers here, so I take that as a high compliment!  I'm still working on finishing Astrid's axe, so I want to take more photos after that's done.
