Description Weekly Sketch #137

I came up with this character's name just recently, though he technically existed for about two years now. This rat dragon is the villain who acts as the catalyst for the horrible events that take place in "A Tale of Survival." At first, I didn't give him much of a backstory, but as I worked on this piece, more things came to mind to make him more complex. In the composition, he ends up devouring a little human child for being an irritating brat, and that results in an attack from other humans that decimates much of the rat dragon population. Upon drawing this, I figured that he wasn't always that way...

As a baby, he was found abandoned, and taken in by another human to be taken care of. She raised him as her son, and despite how much bigger than her he grew and grew, he always loved her as his mother. Taking care of him was difficult, as rat dragons ate a lot, but she loved him just the same. When he became an adult, he took it upon himself to protect her house and her farm; using his sheer size and bulk as an aegis from harm. He was happy to help her, and he was even playful with the other little children of the village; letting them climb all over him like a big, fluffy stuffed animal. Everything changed one day when he was suddenly accused of eating some of the children overnight by some of the leaders, and despite there being no evidence for this, a mob forms that demands he die, or leave for good. The mob includes the very woman who raised him from a child, and he feels hurt and betrayed. He can't convince them that he didn't kill those children, and he eventually decides to storm off in anger and tears. He could've easily wiped out that mob by just squashing them, but that wouldn't have helped his case. He decides from that day forward that all humans are scum and can't be trusted. He gets angrier and more bitter the older he gets, and he winds up living all alone; no wife, no kids, no friends...just his past. By the time the little kid shows up to irritate and annoy him, he has no patience or sympathy for the lad, and for his first (and only) time, kills a human being. He feels no remorse for this evil, feeling justified for the time he was wronged decades ago.

As it turned out, the children he was accused of eating had just run away for a few days to explore the island; things would've turned out differently for Oliver had they just told someone...
