Digging the change man definitely improved, from pose to lighting and coloring and detail. But I how do you find the drive to draw continually like the way you do?

Nice improvement. The wide stance is much more powerful.
Here is something you could try for coloring, and it's easy. Use a brush set to soft light, and like 20% opacity. Then use a big soft brush. Use the mask or whatever you use to isolate like say his shirt. Then take the color from his pants, and paint a bit of that into the shirt where they are close together.
Do something similar for the shadows. Add some spill light into the shadows.
If you go to www.ipaintgirls.com then painting, scroll to the bottom and check out the quick comic book coloring technique. I show a fast way to acheive this. It's a quick way to get more color variation into a piece.

what whas the reason that you got away from the painterly style ?

theCHAMBA In reply to comic-coloring [2010-03-29 13:04:27 +0000 UTC]
I liked trying my hand at a bunch of styles.
Throughout the years I went through a few.
Cel-shading by far is my fave as it incorporates elements from all the previously tackled styles.
Now I'm just fine tuning and exploring Cel-shading.
who knows what's next, or even if I'll even stray
away from it.

you could do both...the penciled version of your last deviations just scream to be colored in a painterly style...would look for sure great.

Yeah that Won't happen.
Not from me anyway.
I'd rather move forward to do a new piece rather than re-work an older/unused piece.
I like the idea though.

Both are very cool
I think it shows a huge difference as well though
There is a high amount of detail in both but the shadows are more apparent on the right one and the angle is slightly twicked.
I also think you have a more intense feel on the one on the right, it seems more like he's ready to pounce or come at you than the one on the left.

Wow. Any artist whose work sparks such depth of conversation, no matter whether in positive or negative energy, is worthy of being called great. It reminds me of another artist discussion I read a few years back on Corey Lewis.
Anyway. To agree with a previous statement, I at first thought this was drawn by two different people. Then I read the description and was like "Seriously?! No Way! That's Cool!...That bastard! I wanted to do that!" lol.
Nice work as usual Chamba. I can definitely say that I see a great improvement in your work. The thing a lot of folks forget is that an artist is really the sum of all of their parts. You realized that you excel in doing things a certain way and you improved on it. I have mad respect for any artist who is willing to take a hard look at how they drew a few years back and compare it to how they draw now.
It can show you all the things you've learned and the things you've yet to tackle. The lighting is amazing in the second version. I can really tell that he's struggling against his bonds. The first, while done well, does have the same emotion to it.
Enough of my rambling though. Good Stuff. ala my boy graphitist, Keep your lead up!

I like the character, but would it be weird to say that I like the 2004 one better? The 2010 one seems too computerized, overdone, and kind of generic. The 2004 has more character, more depth, and seems more realistic. 2004 also seems more dangerous to me, the 2010 one is more blatant so even though he's more muscled you at least know what you're dealing with, the 2004 seems less predictable like I would have to be constantly on guard. Anyway, I like 2004 better, he's more interesting and unique.

Damn... guy looks really, really insane 6 years later. You can see vast differences in anatomy and line work. Wonder how he manged to bulk up while inside that suit 6 years tho. J/P.
Great Job.
Hm... now that you're like, involved in Capcom projects all the time... maybe you can convince them to add this Super Street Fighter IV Turbo X or something?
Although he gives me the same vibe I get when looking at C. Viper... like they'd be more at home in KoF instead.
