LOVE IT!....I think you did fabulous...but if you're still having trouble...I agree with the chilling of the clay too but be careful...it can cause the clay to crack when it gets warm again...and I assuming this is an oven bake clay like sculpey.
with small characters I sculpt like this...I use a little wooden dowel or a long wire and stick it right into the bottom of my piece to hold it and spin it while i smooth and sculpt...

I saw the other deviation a moment ago, and have to say that was an excellent first attempt. the progress you've made between the two was even more astounding.
A tip for the problem you're having with squishing the other end, put your clay in the fridge/freezer for a while, and you'll be able to hold is much more firmly. If it's not too awkward, you can also hold it with just your middle and ring fingers, they're much weaker than the index, so you'll be able to hold more lightly without trying.

You might try working with the clay while it's chilled. That way it will be harder and less likely to smoosh in ways you don't want it to. So work on it for a while, realize it's too soft, then stick it in the fridge for a while.
It works with candy bars. It'll work with clay!
