Horse: BTs Mustard Blue
Race: 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic
Feature: WBS I'm The King Of New York Wanted to make this a little more detailed but then I realized I am running out of time so XDStory: 1,003 wordsBlue was alone. He had felt that way since that horrible, horrible barn fire. He had been hurt, but he had been more concerned about everyone else. The Hera person had not talked to him since then, and the James person had disappeared. Everyone who actually did see him were all sad, Blue was scared something bad had happened. Only T-bird consoled him that his humans were alright. There were other people, at least, at the other farm. They were all nice to him and gave him treats and he could talk to Chaser and Allonsee and T-bird whenever he liked. But then he was moved again.
Blue didn’t mind the new place. It was HUGE. There were several new horses he got to see, everything was so clean and so big, his stall was roomy, and the food was the best Blue had ever had. Blue even got to be turned out in a giant pasture for a few minutes, to which he greeted as many horses as he could. But he only got to stay there a few days, too.
At first Blue thought he was going back home. He was pleased about that, he wanted to see his Hera person and the James man. But then two more horses were put in the trailer with him, horses Blue knew were not going home with him. They were champions, after all. He had heard Geromino had won a very big sprint race halfway across the world and Steel had won a whole lot of other races, races that Blue could only dream of winning. They were quiet during the journey. Good companions who listen to his stories, but were still all business. So Blue kept to himself.
When they arrived, Blue knew exactly where he was. It was the same track as that fateful race he lost by a neck to Foxfire not so long ago. Blue wondered what his humans could possibly want for him, seeing as he had only begun lightwork training just a few days prior to traveling.
Then the hard training begun, training that had his muscles sore and his stomach growling far more than usual. As more and more horses started to arrive, he discovered that he was going to race soon. And it was a big race, because the horses that came were champions from around the world. Last Queen, Scrappy, Windy, Gremlin, Demon, and several others that had him anxious. Nervous for what was to come and how he was going to compete against such big names.
But he was still alone.
Michael was riding him most days, of course, but the Hera woman still did not come to visit him and it was not the James man training him. Even the Hera woman’s kids had not dropped by to say hello. All the horses were super focused, from what he could tell. It was a champions race, everyone was going to try their hardest. And that meant no one to talk to.
Blue was on the track early that day. The lights were still on, the sky glowing where the sun would make its appearance hours in the future. He walked the same walk he did before the Derby, calm. Cool. Collected.
Michael hardly had to urge him at all into the canter, which he picked up right away. He didn’t really have the energy put much effort into it, though.
“What’s wrong there, Blue?” Michael asked, rubbing his neck. Blue just continued loping along.
“I’ve noticed you’ve been down lately,” Michael spoke to fill the time. “Still thinking about the fire?” Blue didn’t understand the human, just continued running. His mind drifted to what had happened to make his humans so absent. The fire. It still scared him, made him tense. It was a terrifying experience. Maybe it made them scared too.
“Yeah, it really hit us hard, didn’t it, boy?” Michael went on. “Hit so hard, we’re in completely different colors! But we’re still here, aren’t we? Still going strong.” Blue snorted, the dust getting to him. T-bird had said that the humans didn’t have a place to live anymore. That the fire had destroyed everything. A horse from the new barn he’d stayed at told him that he going to start racing again to help rebuild what was lost. Was that true?
“You gotta at least try, though, Blue,” Michael continued, rubbing him again. “Phestus may be young, but he’s determined to save the stables, and he’s using you to do it. You gotta go fast, do you hear me? Work as hard as you can.”
Blue lifted his head, feeling the desperation through Michael’s steady hands. He hadn’t noticed that before. The colt had been so focused on his loneliness, he hadn’t realized Michael felt different. Nervous. Fearful. Sad. He didn’t like that at all.
For Blue, racing had always been about having fun and making people happy. He loved the way his people came up and fed him carrots after every race, no matter how well he did. They would fawn over him and let other people fawn over him and let little kids pet him. And then he got to take pictures. After the fire, though, he got none of that, and without the cheers he felt like racing had lost its meaning. Like he was just running because other humans wanted him to, not because he wanted it.
As he stretched out his legs, however, reaching as far as Michael would let him, he realized he still wanted to run. He wanted to beat the champions that had come to test him. It didn’t matter if there were others there to cheer him on or not, the point was to make them feel better. To make everything alright again.
‘But not for the glory,’ he thought. And stepped it up to a controlled gallop, giving Michael everything he asked for, knowing he had a job to do, and this time, he had to do it perfectly.
