**About 2 months before the O.A.G Opal sat down with Jamie to have a talk about some shit he’d been trying to work through. Jamie has a form of telepathy they’ve been calling Dreamwalking where when he sleeps his unconscious mind reaches out and latches onto the sleeping minds of people around him throwing him into their dreams. This has been pretty damn scary for the teen given who he’s living with and the memories they relive in their dreams. Opal has been working with Jamie to help him develop blocks and barriers to help him stop him from ending up in other people’s dreams, they’ve had some success but that’s been with the small group at Four Seasons the majority of which either have their own mental shielding to stop people from accidentally entering their minds (Del, Opal, Cala and Fa, even Sirus to a degree) and the others tend to have pretty quiet dreams (Nat, Thom and Tris).**
The group from Four Seasons joined the other riders that evening for the hack down to the beach. None of them had bothered with saddles for the hack and the three extra horses were on lead, Rei following alongside Thom on Moon while Seaspray and Spiro swarmed around Opal who was riding Knight completely tackless. She had considered letting her two off lead but seeing as they were both possessed by the sillies she’d decided against it for the time being.
As the riders spread out on their way to the beach Opal took the opportunity to talk with her kid somewhat in private.
Walking Knight up alongside Jamie and Rán she kept Seaspray and Spiro away from the chestnut mare and poked at Jamie with her free hand. “How you going kiddo?”
Looking at her startled he flustered not meeting her eyes. “What? I’m fine.”
“And here I thought we’d been over this bullshit,” Opal said with a sigh feeling Knight push waves of support through the Link. “What was the first rule of living under my roof, don’t fucking lie to me it’s not worth it. Something’s eating at you so spill.”
He baulked and Rán pinned her ears back in response.
“Are you sleeping ok? Cause you’ve not been drifting into any of my dreams,” Opal said pressing the teen.
“No, not yours,” he admitted. “It’s just harder with more people around to block. It was the same at the O.A.G. when we dropped off Shale.”
She frowned. I thought we’d got the dreamwalking sorted. “Have you been maintaining your barriers?”
He shot her a glare. “Yes everything’s just louder when there’s this many people around.”
Interesting. “Louder like me and Del loud or Loud like a stadium?” Might as well find out if there’s anyone around.
“Like a stadium or a concert. No one ever feels like Del’s dreams do,” Jamie said with a quirk of his lips.
She laughed at that. “Yeah his aura and mental presence is… unique. I blacked out the first time I reached out to him.”
“Shit really?!” Jamie’s eyes widened and he twisted to look at Opal shocked.
“He’s reined everything in a LOT since I first found him,” Opal explained, “but that still doesn’t tell me why your shielding isn't working as well. It shouldn’t make this much of a difference with this amount of people.”
“Don’t groups like this get loud for you?” he asked confused.
She shrugged. “They would if I was trying to broadcast to everyone here but short of the Gods Blessed we brought with us, and I mean potentially you one day, I’m not reading anyone’s thoughts. I receive only from other telepaths, and only if we’re both Open to it. I can “push” or send my thoughts to anyone but I’m not Open like you are when you go dreamwalking.”
He was quiet taking it in and Opal turned her attention to the coastal countryside passing them by until he was ready to talk through it.
“Do you really think I could push thoughts?” he asked kinda quietly.
Of course that’s what he focused on. “I’m not sure, but possibly. Look for now let’s focus on getting a handle on the dreamwalking before we try anything while awake or you might end up jumping into people’s thoughts or broadcasting when you really don’t want to.” Opal explained. He needed to have control of walking before he started trying to run.
He deflated a little at that. “‘K. Makes sense. Doesn’t help with sleeping while we’re here though.”
Opal pressed a palm to her head. She was going to regret this but she couldn feel Knight also pushing for it through the Link.
“Look. While we’re here you’re going to work on blocking other people to stop you wandering. I’ll help. We can try meditation like we’ve practised at home. I can’t set up any blocks or barriers for you, you’ll have to do that yourself, but if you’re okay with it I can help direct you.”
“What, like from in my head?” Jamie asked shocked.
“Only if you’re okay doing that. I’ve not done it with anyone other than Knight and Sirus because it's pretty invasive poking around in someone else’s mind,” Opal said pressing the seriousness of the offer.
“Uh,” Jamie shifted uncomfortably, “maybe? Look no offence but I don’t really want you all up in my head.”
Oh thank the Gods. “It’s fine. We can work without me in your head. If you get really desperate for sleep while we’re here though and you need somewhere you’re not going to end up swarmed by voices you can jump into my dreams. You know by now I’m generally lucid enough I can keep everything calm enough for you to actually get some rest.” They had been practising focusing on specific dreams as well as blocking at home.
“That’d be better if it's chill with you,” Jamie said relaxing his position on Rán’s back and letting the mare relax too.
Opal smiled at him and reached over to put a hand on his shoulder. “Sure kiddo. Whatever keeps you get some actual sleep. Those bags under your eyes are starting to look like black eyes.”
“Hey!” Jamie flipped her off before pushing her hand off him.
She laughed at him urging Knight into a canter to escape the teen’s wrath. Seaspray and Spiro followed along happy at the change of pace as Jamie gave chase on Rán.
Driving Knight down into the beach Opal took her trio into the sea, gaining ground still laughing as Rán baulked at the waves before listening to Jamie and splashing in after them.
His annoyance was fading as a smile began to grace his face before bubbling up into laughter.
