Description

A.k.a the (first) red engine

Originally Midland Railway 2514, it was built in 1899 by theΒ Schenectady Locomotive works in the U.S. Due to the workshops in the U.K. running at full capacity the MR had to search abroad for new locomotives and so got several american engines to help run the railway. The engine got renumbered 2233 in 1907 due to a new numbering scheme by the MR.

It was later sent to the Sodor in 1914 with several other Midland engines due to a locomotive shortage on the NWR, the MR were planing to scrap it a year later in 1915 but it was kept on loan throughout the decade. Finally in 1920 Sir Topham Hatt I bought the engine for a bargain.

It soon went into service as NWR 23, a mixed traffic engine mostly pulling goods trains along the mainline, It was kept in service until WWII when it was blown up in the Barrow Bombings resulting in the engine being damaged beyond repair and therefore having to be scrapped.

So that's my new depiction of the (1st) red engine from the first RWS book that's in the shed with the other engines, I looked closely at the illustration going off of the Dalby illustration only and then looked for a likely basis with only 2 front pilot wheels, I ended up choosing an MR 2511 class. Since it's a Midland engine, it fits the lore and due to it's unique nature also be fitting as an NWR loco.

Edit 9/4/21: I refined the backstory here and there. for one, it's a bit far fetched and unnecessary (financially that) an engine would be getting a rebuild during a locomotive crises and second I wanted to include the Barrow Bombings as the reason the engine was never seen again in the books. btw in my headcanon/AU it was never repainted and kept it's MR Red livery.

You mean the red engine itself or the class of locomotive?

The class of locomotive. And this is a very unique take on the red engine's character instead of going with James but with red wheels.

Oohhh, thanks man

that red engine seems very cliche at this point, and it was all because of an illustration error
