There's a lot of good here. The best part, though, is how her arm-cannon is literally an old cast-iron cannon.
You know, you could easily depict the Chozo (bird-people) as Tengu. They're probably inspired by the Tengu anyway.
If I remember the legends, the Tengu made the best weapons and armor, and could train the best warriors.
Maybe you could give Samus some more fantastic armor. Maybe with a helmet that looks like a bird's head and beak around her eyes?
Good Metroids, by the way. They look like something out of Okami.

You know how delicious the story would be!? Samus in the feudal era, fighting ridley's ancestor that terrorized her village. It bit off her right arm but in the end she replaced it with the dragons head. Sick!
