Description Days 12 & 13 of today is highlighting the final undersea race in my fictional universe, the Merfolk.

Merfolk
As established in my entry about the Cephloids , after The Calamity  some humans sought sanctuary undersea, and those humans split into two groups based on how they dealt with the threat of water pressure. The Cephloids chose to forsake much of their human structure in favor of that of a more octopus-like physique to greater withstand the pressure, but the Merfolk did not want to constrain themselves to a life solely underwater, nor did they wish to forsake that which made them human entirely. Instead of shedding their human-like anatomy, they used their magic to adapt themselves to become stronger in order to withstand the water pressure at the depths. They have both a set of lungs for breathing on land, and a set of gills for breathing underwater. They also took on multiple shark-like characteristics to improve their mobility in the water for hunting and defensive purposes.

Since their adaptations for dealing with pressure were much slower, there are many reports from early mortals of merfolk, as they would often set up camps around remote ocean islands for their isolated location and easier incline into the sea. The extra time paid off though, and the merfolk basically possess superhuman strength as a result. It is this strength that helped them found the great kingdom of Atlantis, nestled somewhere deep in the sea near underwater volcanic vents for warmth.

Merfolk are sociable and noble creatures, who value qualities such as strength and honor greatly. As a result, the Atlantis academy rivals Carsigil greatly as one of the best schools to hone one's potential in battle. Merfolk tend to not wear much clothing due to not feeling the need for it in their underwater home. They mostly just wear decorative pieces made from undersea gems like pearls and imported gold and cloth garments made mostly to cover and house their private regions. Typically the cloth is spun with enchanted threads that make them hydrophobic in order to nor be cumbersome while swimming. Due to their natural affinity for water magic, and its role in their evolution, all Merfolk have blue eyes, however their hair colors can vary. They tend not to cut their hair much, and while long hair and beards are now a given aspect of Merfolk culture, nobody likes to admit that the trend started thousands of years ago because the salt water made their thick hair coarse and annoying to cut and style to the point where they just decided not to cut it and braid it instead.

Obviously, they eat seafood as their primary diet, and centuries undersea has given them plenty of time to refine their craft. Most landwalkers from other magical societies that have visited Atlantis say the seafood is to die for.
