pray for us who have recourse to thee."
~ Miraculous Medal Prayer

I just finished this piece as a wedding gift for a friend of mine who has a great devotion to St. Maximilian Kolbe and requested a piece with this prayer. I went with a fairly simple design (fairly simple as in, limited colors, haha). The trickiest part was the composition; I knew I wanted to do a large prominent initial "O" with an image of Our Lady of Grace in it, but I had a difficult time trying to figure out how to squeeze "MARY" in, and happily I thought of arranging it vertically. I was largely inspired by the Mainz Psalter for the initials and lettering and ornamentation style. The image of Mary in the "O" is based on the cover of one of Kolbe's Rycerz Niepokalanej publications (as another nod to him). The "M" and "I" on either side of her stand for Militia Immaculatae (Knights of the Immaculata), the name of the Catholic movement founded by Kolbe. The other symbols (the 12 stars, the Hearts of Jesus and Mary) reference the Miraculous Medal and the fleur-de-lis, while being common Marian symbols of purity, also point to the French origin of the devotion.
