Description The moulding stage begins...

The green-blue stuff is a non-hardening clay to help me mask off one half of the dog in preparation for pouring a silicon mould over the exposed half.

Once that sets, I get rid of the clay and pour the silicon over the second half for a two-part mould to create reproductions for street installation!

This is all new territory for me so the chances are I'll need to do this all a couple more times before I get it right, hah.

I should have the silicon mould mix soon, photos of that will probably surface too.

I never thought of doing it like that. I had always thought I'd have to cut my original in half. thanks pope, you just really helped me out.

What are you casting then?

I'll be casting lots of things. I've been working through this idea for a children's show for a long time and it'll be nice to start casting mock-ups for puppets and eventually full blown parts.

I also want to try my hand at maybe making some toys. y'know, branch out.

Sounds good man, I'm sure you'll stick photos up when you get stuff together, right?

And aye, this casting stuff is a useful skill to have under your belt. It opens up a lot of opportunities and once I started reading a little, it wasn't nearly as intimidating as I had always thought!

of course I'll post pictures. maybe not of my first attempt (I'm absolutely awful at sculpting) but pictures will be posted eventually.

I've had some training in casting but my teacher always insisted that if you were to do a two part mold you had to cut the object in half and do it that way. so it's nice to know I don't actually have to do that.

anyway, good luck with you casting Pope. and thanks for the links, I'm going to try stuff out as soon as I can.

best of luck with it. The hard part is avoiding the bubbles in both the silicon and later on in the finished product.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus amongst the resources I've read through.

There's a few techniques I'll try to minimize that but failing that, I'll invest in a degasser.
