Description The Rinkhals class assault fighter/light bomber was developed for the Banking cartel navies by the Skytech Corporation and was deployed against the Free Colonies to attack supply fleets, stations and off-world bases. Although capable of atmospheric flight, the Rinkhals was not maneuverable enough to be used in surface attacks on atmospheric worlds, and initial deployment in this role led to catastrophic losses. In void combat, its powerful thruster arrays proved very effective in allowing it to take on even deck fighters in one-to-one dogfights, leading to it being a sought after ship. After the Banking Wars were concluded, the remaining Rinkhals found their way into militia and provincial planet defense arsenals. Armed with two fixed tac guns, four fixed rap dogfight guns, a rear-facing twin-barreled self-defense turret as well as a large weapons bay from anti-ship seekers, drones and bombs, the ships was able to deliver a powerful blow against any fixed emplacement - while also being able to fight its way through fighter screens. Crewed by three (a pilot, bombardier and gunner) and powered by two large planar drive plates, the Rinkhals had impressive speed and acceleration for its size. Although not initially fitted, later incarnations were fitted with an IP (inter-planetary) drive.Β Β

Isn't George Lucas miffed about the X-wing ripoff?

What, so any ship with a long nose and guns at the end of the wings is an X-wing ripoff? It's easy to criticise but how about you try and do better.

I guess it could look like something from Incom if it HAD TO be in the Star Wars universe. Glad you agree that it doesn't look like an X-wing. Thanks for the comment.

I think I’d preferred this to an X-Wing and especially a TIE fighter. The former’s okay, the latter’s a death trap!

Thanks for the comment. I think this ship is perhaps not as maneuverable as the other two - especially the TIE - but its rear-facing turret and weapons load would make up for that, I think. My 2 cents worth, anyway. Thanks again.

How did I miss this one?

I really love the strong military lines on this one. That, and I'm a sucker for anything that's bristling with cannons, so that's always a plus for me!

It's not hard at all to envision how an engagement with these would go- with it's powerful forward armaments, and a defensive "cone" trailing behind each ship, simple formation flights would be ideal to carry the day, while smaller, more traditional fighters would have to rely on much more advanced maneuvers just to stay alive. Though I presume this was by design, but the way the engines are placed shields a large portion of the crew along the center-line from direct fire- as it stands to reason that an opposing foe would attack these craft from the sides in order to overmatch them; so by placing the bulky drive components in the line of fire, it provides the craft greater durability as well as crew surviveability. Whether the Banking Clans care about the fate of their pilots is debatable, but it is clear to see they made a wise "investment" on these fighters.

Again, nice work mate!

Thanks very much for the comment. I really like your interpretation of how they would operate. To be honest, the protection offered by the engines was something I didn't think of - would it be okay if I use it in the official design rationale? It adds a lot of depth to the design. Thanks again. Glad you like the drawing.

Of course mate! Whatever assistance I can lend you, I will!

When I'm writing (typically moreso on my actual "professional" works than on my DA stuff) you have to convey how things look without a picture, and a good way to convey the form of a fantasy machine or vehicle is to describe how it's various parts fit together, so I'm usually looking for that sort of thing.

Thanks - there are some similarities and some of the hull lines are reminiscent of yours, for sure. I think that there are certain shapes that look good and so will pop up again and again in different people's art.
