Description

涙 / Tears

Tough one to name, maybe we go simple?

Not going to spoil, but at least fandom-wise, something like this is likely behind the game title: Tears of the Kingdom. Then we have tears, and you can even interpret it as "tear" in plural, that the kingdom is torn apart, kinda and that Hyrule itself sheds tears. Those are my pondering on that. (No ending spoilers please, I've got all the sages, but not beat the game yet! Am on an extra/miniquest hunt, of course outfits, too~! XD)

This work began so rough ! Same paper as with the previous painting of Link (thank you for all the faves and badges! )

but only bigger. When previously I hadn't used it that passionately and more with drier techniques which gave some doubts. Now this convinces me it's working!

EDIT: And I totally forgot to tell: playing BotW and not looking at my refs too closely, I painted the first layer of his hand like regular skin, then... wait a minute... that hand thing! And I sketched it on that with pen first, and the black markins on his body. Such an epic fail. But convinced myself if nothing works then I'll cover it with gouache mix, luckily it was still alterable. So, that's the struggle story.

Emotion. TotK has some depth of emotion (that I don't find in BotW) which is also painful and also which I adore, somehow. I've had some "obsession" to paint the Master Sword recently, too.

I've written in my notes need to practise metallic objects (on sheen and shadows), well here's one! X'D

Challenging but also quite fun to paint this sword in watercolour! A lot of that look is thanks to lifting technique, it's wonderful! And the whites are by paper and gouache, like elsewhere. But, I'm surprisingly pleased with the sword after all the struggle, and the size truly helps! Somewhat reminds me of that Skyward Sword official art style Master Sword, which I always admired, with the many colours and hues. ^^

Also, am proud of the shading, especially on Zelda. Link's colour scheme was a bit trial and error as I still couldn't decide whether I want night or sunset so it's a mix of warms and blues and I honestly don't know what's going on. The focus was on emotion. So colour theories and colour temperature rules have gone out the window. His hand also doesn't have that much detail as the sword, but well, maybe it's again the light issue that I left it like that.

Yes, the background is a mix of reds and blues, purples and yellows for same reason, excuse me, but I had fun. XD

Zelda's background was started by spray bottle and then adding paint. It was the first test after one loose experiment, on actual painting. I so like the spray bottle technique, it's fun!

Tools: Pencil H, Camel Watercolours (1999), Talons white gouache.

Paper: 27cm x 38cm 180g/m2, acid free watercolour paper (quite old paper too! )

(Conda Watercolour Pad)
