I think that you should pick a slightly lighter shade of red when you're writing it on a black background. Maybe it's just my monitor. Who knows?

I kinda wish I hadn't used red for Hunter's dialogue from start, but that seemed a good idea at that time to avoid awkward speech bubble tails.

Using colors is a good idea. You might be able to play with the lightness of red when it doesn't work against the background without much notice. Like, using a brighter red against dark backgrounds and darker red against bright backgrounds
