I would love to see an extended version of this. Body language is so tricky and there are rarely tutorials as informative and simple as this one.

Thank you! There are books on it that aren't necessarily in the art-realm but more related to psychology and public speaking!

I have a few characters were the head and body are two separate entities and can come apart. this is going to be very helpful when drawing Atlas, Nero, and Taylor(the names of the bodies, the heads are named Chronos, Amari, and James).

Thumb displays are always a HUGE sign of (perceived) dominance. I like that you put that in there x3

If you put feathers on it, it's a sassy birdling! :3
Nice job though. I just can't not think about chickens, the way the head/chest moved at the end there |D

Ooh, this is very useful! I've been needing to do
more dynamic posing, this should really help! Quick
question though, say I wanted to do this with a
species with different anatomy, say, something
like this [link] or this [link] .

I'm assuming I'd follow the same basic formula
behind posing, but as of now I've only done basic
standing poses with these two just because I'm
so unsure of their anatomy. How can I get more
comfortable with different species' anatomies?

ThirdPotato In reply to ToaOrka [2013-02-21 22:01:02 +0000 UTC]

By all means! As long as you've got a spine, limbs, and head, and even if you don't, the notes still apply. Lurching forward into the opponent's "space" is seen as an offensive gesture, sticking limbs close to the body is seen as passive and defensive and other such notes.

As for drawing unique anatomies, understructure is the key point. Being able to find out the underlying simplified shapes will help you to recreate it again and again. [link] this one should help!

Thanks a bunch, I'll be sure to refer
to this when I start working on more dynamic
posing for my aliens!
